Hey I have a 2L with what I think is a faulty starter. I can hold the glow plugs cold for 6-8 seconds and it'll fire up immediatly. However when warm, I still need a few seconds of glow or it won't fire, it'll crank and almost go then not go, I give it some glow and it fires right up. I personally think the starter cranks too slowly to generate enough heat.

I draw tested the starter and it pulled 550 Amps when cranking, seems waaaaay too high for a 2.4L engine. I've also noticed (when bleeding the system when I'm in there) that after about 7 seconds of cranking, the starter all of a sudden goes faster and stronger.

Here's a few videos, how does my starter sound? I'm running dual 650CCA batteries that tested great in april.

fires right up but the starter does sound laboured

Here's a better video, ignore the racket the engine makes, this was before I got the injection pump timed and adjusted properly.

your grounds good?
glow plugs working?

your first crank sounded like its not getting fuel and after a few cranks it fires right up whats the condition of your injection pump?

Yes and yes. The pump is a new reman unit. I’ve adjusted it to the best of my ability.

I recall the FSM has a troubleshooting guide to follow have you already gone thru all the steps?

It could also be weak batteries. Your starter needs every bit of juice those batteries can give.

550A is insanely high. That would be the starter failing and/or corrosion on the starter wires/ground.

I'm a bit confused on your two videos. One fired right up immediately no issues. The other had a long, extended crank. likely due to air in the fuel lines.

The first video was an example of it starting with glow plugs, the second video was with no glow plugs. I will get a better video today. The batteries put out a combined 1100CCA and are relatively new.

inside the starter could just be dirty or have worn contacts
