I posted yesterday about problems with pinging on my 87 60. Well, now I have a much, much bigger problem. Long story short, I blew a big hole in my upper radiator hose, got the engine really hot before stopping. I shut it off, let it cool down and put more water in and installed a new hose. I started it but immediately could tell something was wrong. I pulled the dipstick and saw a lot of water. At this point the engine was still running and I actually saw water leaking out the exhaust pipe--a lot of it! At first I assumed it was a blown head gasket, but could a blown head gasket cause this much water leakage? I'm sure the gasket is gone, but what else could be wrong? I'm going to pull it apart today or tomorrow but was wondering what I need to pay special attention to or check.

Needless to say, my chin is dragging the ground pretty bad. I just spent two weeks working on it after a head and carb rebuild and desmog. I just got it all back together and drove it for a week before this happened. I think if anybody would make me an offer I'd be glad to be rid of it about now.

Turbo (diesel) bummer. Sorry to hear about your troubles.

Good luck with it.

At this point running the engine can only lead to MORE problems. If enough coolant/water gets in a cylander you'll hydro lock the motor, potentially busting all kind of things.

The safest thing you can do is exactly what you plan to do. Pull the head, put in a new gasket, and go from there.

But, yes, it does suck.

So you guys think it's just a head gasket? How likely is it that the 2f head has cracked? What else could cause so much water to come through the exhaust?

If you're getting that much water, it's got to be one hell of a crack, I'd imagine. Not out of the question though. you'll have to pull the head to look at it - you don't have a choice. About the only thing that can kill a 2F, as I understand it, is overheating and running it without oil. That's about it. There is a chance that the head wasn't torqued down tight enough, or something happened there...may not have gotten a good seat on that gasket...

Check that head gasket and don't run the engine. When you put it all back together, do it by the book. Also, if you ever blow a hose like that, do what you can to limp it back - wrap the hose in duck tape if you have to - just don't run that thing hot.

I'm not convinced of anything yet.

If you're not using the air cleaner hose to the front bib, the busted radiator hose could've sprayed coolant directly into the air intake.
Check your air filter. If it's wet in there, you know where it came from.
Remove your plugs and crank the motor to spit out any water (if that much got in, but I doubt it).
Change your oil and filters. Dry your plugs. Then see what's happening.
Later, re-torque your head bolts and adjust your valves.
