Im looking at getting a warn for my 40 but not sure wich one. I did some searching on here and found that the 8274 would be the best one, but for my price range a new one is too much. Will any warn work on a 40? I was looking at the XD9000.
I see that you are in Montana. I bet you can find an old (but still good) Warn M8274 on a pick-up somewhere. Here in Washington State we see them on Craigslist on a regular basis for $300 - $800. If the winch needs re-building, no worries, Warn Tech Support can assist you.
For the low-mount electric winches like the M8000, XD9000, etc. yeah this will work fine on your 40 Series, but the mount will be different that the M8274.
Honestly, for a 'wheeling rig that might see lots of winching the M8274 is hard to beat. For occasional use the low-mount winches are fine.
Thanks Alan. If i do go with something like a XD9000, will it mount to my bumper? I have the plane looking bumper with a fairlead spot in the middle, and above is a plate that sticks up off the bumper with holes for mounting. Heres a pic, the plate is behind the jack.
dont forget to consider other brands mile marker is a good quality winch
harbor freight sells good winches
google around and find out which winches are made by major companies but carry lesser known names they will be 99% the same winch but a lot less $$
the upright is great b/c it can pull all day long and not get hot but unless you plan on staying stuck thats not a huge deal (iv read its also the best w/the winch rope which has alot of advantages over cable) but again look at how you are going to use it how often you will use it and how much $$ you could save (and by save ofcourse i mean spend on other stuff to go along w/the winch )
An 8274 really is the winch to get, if you actually plan on winching. A used 8274 is miles better than a new M8000 or xd9000.
Still, any winch is better than no winch, it's just that the 8274 is the perfect winch for the FJ40, you really owe it to yourself to find one in your price range. I would avoid any and all Chinese winches.
MileMarker electrics are pretty much garbage as are any winches you might find at harbor freight.
The only other winches to consider are Ramsey's, or Superwinch Huskies.
Well, i found a 8274-50 on clemson4wheel.com for 1500 bucks. It was the cheapest i could find, so i ordered it. I hate to spend that much money, but i know im gonna love it! Cant wait to use that thing.
You probably could have found a good, used M8274 for ~ $500 if you'd hunted around a bit.
Yes, the front bumper on your FJ40 is set-up to fit the Warn upright winches. To use a low-mount winch would require changing to a cradle that bolts on top of the frame rails.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with an M8000 for your 40. I just put one on my 6000 lb 80 series and used it hard at Moab last week on several difficult pulls and it performed great.
At $540 shipped to your door off of ebay, it's hard to go wrong.
I saw some "other" brands in use, but manged to finish my lunch break before they finished their pull. Go Warn and don't look back.
