just about to install a warn winch on my rig, i was wondering about the negitive and postive cables that are supposed to connect to the battery; how are you supposed to connect these cables? Would it be ok to just bolt them on to the side posts on the battery terminals?-I have heard that if you have a optima battery, that you are not supposed to connect these cables this way. I am going to do this wiring on my factory stock battery. please any help, thanks.

do not hook them up the side terminals on an Optima, but I have a feeling you are a bit confused as to what they mean by side terminals. an Optima(and others like them) have top posts AND side posts. I think your asking if you can hook the cables up to the side of the top posts......is this correct? if so then yes.

You can also hook up the POS cable to the starter POS post and the neg to the battery, this is not the best but it works fine, my fj40 was like this sense new(I have changed it now however)

land pimp, that is what i meant ( the side of the post tops) is this ok? here is a pic of what i meant

So why shouldn't you hook the winch up to the side posts on an Optima?

Yup, that will work. In the future if those "lugs" corrode then change to military style and add eyelets to your cables, they are easy to clean that way.

The side posts connection to the guts of the battery cannot sustain high load draws for more than a few seconds(like for a starter). The posts will literally self-destruct. Been a couple people on PBB post about the posts melting out of the battery...

YUP. the Oritals "supposedly" do not have this problem and its OK to use the side posts for a winch........me......not so sure ;)
