It is a permanent magnet motor since it only has two terminals at the end of the motor housing. I cannot seem to figure out what model it is, however. A lot of the basic parts swap between a lot of the frames (like the clutch handle that you obviously need), so parts should be fairly easy to find. Due to the motor mounting style you will not be able to straight swap for a series-wound motor which would make the unit more powerful.

If you can clean it up and get it running it would be a winch, and a brand-name one at that. I say run it! Email Warn customer service with your pictures and see if they can identify it. Once you have that they can send you a parts diagram and manual.

Ok I've done some research on my winch and have found that it's an M6000 w/ permanent magnet motor. Found a number on the motor. I bought it for 50$. It'll need a new rope, clutch lever, leads...so far. I want to put it on a 98 Z71 Ext Cab. I need one to pull me out of tight spots during hunting season. Worth building?

A 6,000 lb. winch is on the light side for a full-size pickup.

I agree. If you do choose to use it, get a snatch block so at least you can double the pulling power. Do not buy winch rope new, it seems that you can find rope used or new take-offs on Craigslist where people are changing to synthetic. Don't forget a hook, hook strap, and fairlead as well. Did it come with a remote? That will set you back a few dollars as well. For battery leads I would buy a set of cheap 4AWG or 2AWG jumper cables and just hack them up. Even with buying the terminals it will be cheaper than a lead set and you get more length if you need it to reach the battery.

Add up all the dollars you will need to spend on making that winch functional for you then compare it to what you can purchase new. The newer "VR" series winches from Warn are their budget line but would be brand new with a warranty and all new parts. Entry point is about $480. You can buy Superwinch LP series for $300 or a Smittybilt XRC for $300, so keep that in mind before you go spending money on this old untested winch.

I recently built a Warn M8000 from parts I scavenged and ended up spending around $300 on it but was given the rope as a trade on some labor. I probably would have had $350 in it. I bought another M8000 off a four-wheeling forum for $325 last year.

Whichever way you go, good luck and have fun!

I may just keep it for parts and pick up a complete used winch. It doesn't have a remote but it did come with the roller fair lead. I had a feeling 6000 was too small. My z71 has the 14 bolt rear end so its a little on the heavy side. Thanks for all the help.
I'll post pics of the next winch I pick up.
