Does anyone know what kind of metal the housing of a warn winch is made of? The paint on mine is flaking off after 8 new england winters. There is a lot of whitish oxidation all over the place. I need to know how to treat it so that I can paint it.

Thanks

Hi It,s some kind of aliminium alloy on the 8274 with the drum made of steel and motor housing out of cast iron
A brass or stainless wire brush should take care of the loose stuff and you can remove scratches with varying grades of wire wool, Not sure what kind of paint to use but even if I did It's probably got some kind of god damn funny name over there;p

Yup - cast aluminum case on an 8274. The white stuff is oxidated aluminum (rust). Wire brush and spray bomb in your preferred color as stated above.
