Wanted - 96/97 Clean FZJ80

As the title implies, I am in the market for a late model (96-97 ideally) FZJ80. I drove to Richmond today with cash in hand to pick up this cruiser https://forum.ih8mud.com/nc-olde-north-state-cruisers/752099-fj80-advice.html, but unfortunately it was a lot rougher in person both inside and out than the photos depicted, the engine didn't sound perfect and I just didn't feel good about it. I think I can find a much cleaner one for that kind of money.

Musts:
-1996-1997 Landcruiser (don't want a Lexus)
-Clean interior and exterior (I realize a 16 or 17 year old car is going to have some nicks and dings, but the fewer the better as it's going to be my DD)
-Green, tan, grey, or blue exterior
-Mechanically sound with "lower" miles (ideally less than 150K)
-Budget is 8-10K (with some play for the perfect cruiser)

Would be nice:
-40th or Collector's Edition
-Stock or relatively stock (planning to do a mild build but I'd prefer to choose the parts myself)
-Lockers

I'm really interested in finding a clean, well-maintained cruiser - I don't have to buy it tomorrow and am willing to wait as long as I need to in order to find the perfect one. Any and all leads would be appreciated!!

1. Why a 96-97?? 95-97 are exactly the same.

2. Toyota did not make an FJ80 in 96 or 97 they are FZJ80s if you call one an FJ80 the head gasket will instantly implode.

:flipoff2:

Now that, that's out of the way i'll keep my eye out for you.

Haha I did know the first point, just said that because the newer the better and I'd honestly prefer one of the 97 special editions, but you're right - a 95 would work as well. Had seen the FZJ before but didn't it realize it referred to the engine change in 93, now I do - thanks for the info and thanks for looking!

Heard back from the guy in Salisbury and got some more pictures. 169K, unfortunately doesn't have the stock wheels, hasn't replied about performed maintenance yet, little rust around the running boards and the back bumper but he's says the undercarriage is clean (not sure if I believe that or not). Pretty nice looking overall and I may end up going to take a look if he'll divide his asking price by about 2 - 13K is absurdly high in my opinion. I could make this one work, but I'd have to get it for the right price as I'd have some work to do.

I agree, and basically told him that. He thinks the cruiser is worth 8k (which it's not) and he's got 3k in wheels/tires/radio so he said 11k is as low as he'd go. I explained he's not going to get retail out of aftermarket parts and honestly it would be worth more to me with stock wheels so I'm absolutely not paying more for wheels and tires I don't even want. Said he doesn't have to sell it and doesn't want to lose money on it, so my guess is he'll probably just keep it.

I have a truck if you are interested:

1. 1997 40th edition with 160k miles
2. OEM aux tank
3. OME 2.5 lift.
4. Sliders
5. ARB front with winch
6. Slee rear carrier
7. New tires
8. All OEM parts for anything on the vehicle either bought from me or CDan. (Some even installed by me).
9. TRD supercharger
10. HG has been done.
11. Meticulously maintained by a doctor.
12. Located in LA. Has lived either in the south or in the southwest it's entire life.

It has been babied.

If you are interested, let me know. It is not my rig

Some folks think their aftermarket parts make it a gold mine! I've seen a general rule stated (that I agreed with) that a fair price would be the value of the vehicle itself plus maybe 25% of the add ons. I made an offer on a built 470 with a KBB value of $24500 in the upper $20's. buyer wants $34500 for a truck with 130k on it! It's nice and nicely built, but I'm not paying full price for his add ons. I certainly don't expect to get much for all the additions I did to my FJ Cruiser.

Wow! That's almost my exact vision for the build - will be sending a PM shortly.

That is one guy i'd have no problem taking his word over the net on the quality of a cruiser

Thanks for the support guys, this definitely sounds like an awesome cruiser but I'm worried with all the mods it's going to be out of my price range. My budget is 8-10k, which I think can get me an awfully nice cruiser (especially if it's pretty stock) but that probably won't be enough to find one it top shape that's also built. Honestly, I'd rather buy a stock one and build it up over the next few years - I think the planning and slow progress of a build is half the fun of something like this anyway.

I updated my original post to include my budget, probably should have done that from the start. Thanks again for all the help, I have no doubt I'll find a great cruiser thru this forum!

Nice looking 95 cruiser on eBay, 116K with lockers that is located in Fayetteville. Spent most of its life in NJ, which scares me a little because of rust but the undercarriage looks clean. Wish he had put in on Craigslist first, I feel like these tend to sell pretty high on eBay. E-mailed the seller with a few questions and may try to take a look tomorrow. What do you guys think?

read it a little further. Looks like 172,000 on the clock, however no pic of the odometer to verify.

"On Jul-29-13 at 08:58:44 PDT, seller added the following information:

This truck has been in my garage for last year, and I didn't see any leaks on the floor. I drove the truck from Florida to NC year ago without any problems. I didn't plan to sell it, but plans have changed. I'm driving same truck, and it has 172 000 miles. No issues. Zero."

This is from the vehicle report on ebay:
08/02/2012 SARASOTA, FL 114,858 Motor Vehicle Dept. TITLE (Title #:0109491133)

I e-mailed him, he's got another 80 that he's built up so that is the one he is referring to. Had plans to build this one as well but has ended up deciding to sell it. He's willing to sell locally and end the auction, I'll keep you guys posted.

I can look at it for someone if needed.

Thanks, I might take you up on that! I haven't heard back from the seller regarding price yet, but if it is reasonable then I'm going to try to head down Saturday afternoon. If you had a chance to check it out prior to then that would certainly save me a trip if there are some huge red flags. I'll send you a PM when I figure out if things are going to happen on Saturday or not.
