I am contemplating changing my stock dual battery setup on my 92 HDJ81.

I am no expert.
Just trying to learn.

Right now I believe it is set up 24v for starter and12v for everything else running off both batteries at the same time.
Is this assumption correct?
This is a JDM vehicle.

I am thinking of putting in a 12v starter and separating the batteries.
Making one a dedicated starter battery and the other, an accessories focused battery.

The way I think about it I can isolate the accessories and leave the starter battery strong.
I will also be able to jump from one battery to the next.
Finally, I fear that if one of my batteries goes dead, I will not be able to send 24v to the stock stater, thus being stranded.

Talk me out of it.
Tell me why it is a bad idea.

If it is a good idea, let me know your opinion on best approach.
Does the Redarc dual battery separator do that job?
What would you do?
Thanks in advance.

Yes it's a good idea.
Unless you live deep in sno-Mexico, you're unlikely to need 24volt to start. Being direct injection, the HDJ81 should start very quickly.

The standard system has the two batteries linked in parallel, and has a solenoid that switches them to being linked in series for the starter.

The 24 volt start system has some weaknesses.
The 24 volt starters burn out contactors quicker than 12 volt.
If you have one battery go bad, it will drag the second one down very quickly. Batteries need to be identical, so if one is not 100% you end up replacing both. (This gets old real quick!)
Jump starting can be a problem if your batteries are really dead.
