? I got Nitto 305's for $136 locally here at discount tires ?

Are the Firestone MT's some sort of unknown super tire?

As far as I'm concerned, yes they are some sort of super tire.

I don't think my trucks will ever run anything else until I want to go to 35's. The only reason I'd switch then is because a 33 is the biggest you can get the MT in.

I've got a set of Wally tires on my Tacoma. So far, so good. Good road tire, not to bad off-road.

BTW, I had a set of wally MT's. Also a good tire.

I agree with Doc. I have the Firestone Destination MT's on my 85 BJ60. Excellent handling, road noise isn't that bad. I haven't had them off road as much as I would like but I am very happy with them.

This is the biggest that I've found in 16" LT285/75R16 is this the 33?

Yep. 33x11.5 or something close to that.

I''m reviving this :)

Does anyone have experience or an opinion on how the BFG Land Terrain compares to the Liberator (or any of the Big O tires?). I priced a set out tonight as the new cruiser still has michelins on it

Also I have read the 33's fit an 80 with no problem on stock suspension. Is this true even with the 91-92s?

Cards81fan,

(Brace yourself as you are going to get tired of hearing this about your new-to-you truck.)

33's will physically fit the FJ80 in most cases. I wouldn't say "with no problem" though. You will probably have some rubbing when you stuff a wheel. I have seen 305/70R16's rub a little on a twisted up '96 with 850/863. The recommended way to fit 33's on the FJ80's is to install a 50mm OME lift and regear. The larger tyres will make the 3FE even slower than it already is so you can pick up some pep with lower gears. While you are regearing would be the time to add ARB lockers front and rear. If you regear back to stock equivalaent you won't need to adjust the speedo/odo; if you gear lower you may want to use a Tru-speed or comparable. Don't know if the xfer gear that Christo has will work.

So that means (to do it right) those $1000 33" tyres will cost you about $5,000.

Oh don't apologize Wulf, that is exactly the type of blunt but enlightening repsonse I wanted in regards to the lift.

I just wasn't sure if the FJ80 was at all different from the 93+ (I read nothing saying the suspension was different, but also nothing saying there were the same). Especially since the 93+ tires are expressed normally in metric sizes (due to 16" rim) and mine are in inches (due to the 15" minitruck rims). That's why I was a little unsure on the true fitment on my truck.

Thanks for the information. I think I'll stick to the 31s.

well, I ended up with used MT/Rs as a second set. Not that I will use the LTXs much any more... :D Wanted the added traction.
Might have gone with MTs as I like the look and ratings better, but oh well, couldn't bear to disappoint Dan...

>> Not that I will use the LTXs much any more <<

I'm not sure which size of MTRs you got but around town I sure prefer to use the stock size LTX tires then my 33" MTRs. The LTX are quieter, handle better, better braking, longer lasting and better acceleration ect...

However they are a pain to change but around town I still prefer the LTX. The MTR do look cooler but function over looks ;)

BTW - this thread caught my eye... given the recent chit chat thread on WalMart.

mine are 285s. They are a bit humming at 40/50 or so. But handling is great.
I'm not using the LC as a DD so I'll probably put them to good use most of the time I'm driving the LC.

actually, I don't like the look of the MT/R's thread, these weird projections on the side are pretty ugly I think... And these zig zag things in the middle. Blah! The Firestone MTs look more like tires ought to for my money.

If you are going to spend $150 per tire, may as well go with the ProComp Xterrains. That is, if they are still on sale.

I've done a bit of reading on the Procomp and the majority of opinions seem to be that they are best avoided, from what I could tell...

Oh no.
Where where you when I was thinking of getting them?
Where did you read about them. All the reviews I have read were good.

I still LOVE the Wild Country RVT tire. Have run them for about 20 years with no problems.

For those who bought the Liberator, did your local Walmart have them in stock or did you have to order them? For some reason, I can't get the Walmart website to match those tires to a LC

I got a set of AT Liberators at the local Walmart and they had them on stock the same day. I got them for my FJ60. What I found interesting was that I got the 30x9.5x15 size on Saturday and went back the following week to see if I can exchange them for the 31x10.5X15 and they did not give me a hard time or anything, I just paid the difference which was about $7.00 each.
I asked the attendant about the source of the tires and he looked it up on his computer and told me they were made by Michelin exclusively for Walmart, there is a code on the tires that tells who the manufacturer is.
I like them a lot and even they had a mid-aggresive thread they were not so noisy, sold the FJ60 with only 500 miles on the new tires.

I was able to order the Liberator at Walmart's web site, but then got an email from Walmart that they were discontinuing the tire. I was able to locate four at a Walmart store by calling. If you have any interest at all in this tire, I suggest that you call you local Walmart to see if they have any left.

I have only had them for one day, but I love them. I have already noticied an improvement in drive due to the stiffer sidewall.
