I built this cover today between top coats on my tail gate repair. Before I get too out of control on it, I thought I'd get some opinions.

Should I go with this one? (finished, of course)

Or this one, twice ripped off and now painted flat black. The other ones in worse shape, but serviceable.

Nice brown sugar in the weld

Stick with the black.

Yeah, I seem to get that a lot more when I use the welder with 100% CO2. I'd grind all those down smooth and paint over 'em anyway.

Never migged stainless, but I know with tig that if you get Argon behind the weld, or wrap it in aluminum foil or use that spray on stuff it helps not suck in the atmosphere from the back.

I think the black looks better, which means you probably won't go that route.

How about just cutting off the whole thing and fabbing something up.

Sooner or later I will. I want to fab up a reciever mount for my spare for when we travel with the kids. They like the middle seats out, which leaves no room inside. Around town or on the trails I can keep it inside. I had it full time on the back and hated it.
Once I get the spare sorted out, I'll cut the bumper off and tuck it back in about 4".
