Hello
My 1994 VX80 4.2 Turbo Diesel Auto really struggles to start off on steep inclines in high ratio unless I shift into low ratio, [in low ratio I think it could pull a house down!],its a full time 4wd type.
Not sure where to start throwing cash, will it be the torque converter or power output down? or something else? its done around 200k miles.
Thanks in advance
John- UK

You will have to be far more specific, what is steep i.e. is it on the highway, off road what? What makes you suggest that it is the Torque Converter? Has the vehicle been serviced regularly? is it running OK? Are the breaks binding? Does it smoke? Is the throttle cable/Kick down cable adjusted correctly? When was the auto oil last changed?

Lastly just for curiosity were in the UK are you?

Hi
Im in N Staffs but my 80 is in southern Spain, by steep incline I mean a dirt track that a 2wd car cant get up , Ive owned it for the last 40k miles and only changed the oil/filters regulary and of course the cam belt, auto fluid was changed around 5k miles ago and also valve clearaces were checked, the engine seems to pull fairly well when above 1800 rpm, smoke is minimal at revs above tick over but it can be quiet smelly when ticking over, the throttle cable pulls the pump wheel right back to the stop, not sure about kick down cable but gear changes seem to work fine.
I have never had the injectors reset as yet.
Thanks
John

It is worth while checking that the kick down cable is adjusted as per spec there is reference to it. The injectors may benefit from an inspection now. Take them to a diesel specialist they will check the spray pattern etc and will advise if nozzles need changing. It may also be worth while having your injector pump checked over and calibrated. If the road is very steep I can not say but are you expecting too much from it? Is the vehicle laden as well? I am quite impressed by the power and climbing ability of my 19941HDJ80 1HD-T. It is possible to have the pump adjusted to increase fuelling and turbo adjustments
