I'm looking to throw a vortec in my 40, possibly mated to sm465 or 420, I'm sure a bunch of you have done it, any suggestionsor things to stay away from?

Any help is appreciated,

Thanks,

Tom

I just got done w/ my rig using an 01 vortec 5.3...
Chicago builds a 40
It's a looooong ass thread, but there is a TON of good info in that, that everyone contributed to.

Hi All:

Look up "Spotcruiser," he has just finished a Vortec 5.7L swap into a '76 FJ40 along with the NV4500 transmission.

Regards,

Alan

I would do a lot of research before putting a manual behind a modern Vortec. I have heard it can be very difficult to get the computer tuned right to run with the factory auto.

I just completed mine a while ago and it has been out on quit a few trips now, kinda wish I would have went with a auto. I mated mine to a 465 and the gearing is great but the clutch was a probelm in the begining and now that its fixed it works well. The auto would just make things alot easier on the trail. Not wanting to start a auto vs manual debate cause that horse is dead many times over just my .02.

I agree...I think the new GM OD auto trans shift and seem to work well. Would be a great setup to go with a new style auto trans in my view. Also makes life easier on the drivetrain.
