I've searched past threads to try and find where I originally heard of this, but can't seem to locate the info. Can anyone tell me exactly what Volvo turbos can be used with a diesel 3B? Yeah, I'd love an AXT, but the budget isn't there right now. So... any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

search and post about this in the diesel section of this web site. There is a lot of good info there. I think a Volvo from a 2.1 or 2.3 liter "B" series Volvo gasoline negine would be fine. I would use any year from '86 on from a 700 series volvo other than 1991 then you get a water cooled Garrett T2 or T3 or T2/T3 hybrid. Make sure you take the full wastegate actuator as well.

I have a Volvo turbo on my 3B...sort of. Here's the deal. The Volvo turbos are simply one of the many Garrett T3's that they make. The one I had had a .42/.60 Ratio and I was going to use it.

Two reasons why I didn't. 1) My smart friend calculated that the .60 compressor portion would take to long to provide any useable boost. 2) The compressor housing was cracked.

So I grabbed a used Chrysler compressor housing (.48) which is also a Garrett and therefore interchangeable, and swapped it.

The bottom line is virtually all the turbos guys are using are Garretts b/c they are plentiful and cheap. In my opinion the .42/.48 Chrysler version off of a Lebaron etc is the absolute perfect turbo for the 3B.

My bro-in-law has an AXT and he likes my Chysler setup better for acceleration and peak power.

My two cents,
Craig.

lumpy 70, turbo from any year labaron can be used?

Thats good to know that the chrysler labaron turbo shows more power then the turbo kit imported from australia. My question is about the manifold. Ive been told to use manifold from a different diesel that bolts up to my 3b engine. The idea of course is to have the outlet on the center of the manifold for equal backpressure on all the runners. Or is this critical? can a existing 3b manifold be used with the labaron turbo.

I believe that the turbos from virtually any Chrysler product are the same. You are ideally looking for a .42/.48 turbo, and it will be written right into the casting. They are available in mini-vans, new yorkers, daytonas, lebarons, and even some k-cars.

I used a 13B-T manifold bought from G&S. It bolts right up. One other option is to build one. Lowenbrau on this list made on using two 1 1/2" 90's and two 1 1/2" tees welded to a plate which matched the bolt pattern. He then cut a hole and built a mount for the turbo on top of the pipe. Lots of fabrication involved. Lastly, another option is to simply flip up your 3B manifold. It is the least graceful, but it still works.

HTH,
Craig.
