I have a 60, and about 2 months ago when i turn the lights on at night and am sitting at a light idle the volts go down to 8 and my lights get really dim, i ordered a new alternator but havent recieved it yet, but i have heard from others that it isnt the alternator and that i need a new wiring harness and should just go with a dual battery setup....i need some help, anything would be much appreciative...Thanks

Nick

battery cables?

If you've already checked voltage at the battery and alt (FSM takes you right through it, it's pretty easy)....It'd start with checking/replacing your grounds and pos battery cables. The ones Urban LandCruisers sells are saaaa--weeeet and much better than OEM. I got'em and WOW, they're nice. He's on the board on the vendors section and as Dd113 (I think). Since you're running accessories (winch, etc), it might be a good upgrade before dual batts and other harnesses.

Let me know if you want a quick run down of what the FSM says on checking voltage.

Dual batts won't help if your stock system isn't working well...suggest the following from FAQ

Also, most Auto parts stores will do an in-car alt/batt check for free. Might be a good thing to do also.

I would look into a rebuilt Toyota alternator ( think they have em). Check your voltages like stated above.

If you're in Auburn this advice is applicable, if in Memphis it's not.

If the altenator is the problem, then pull it and take it to Auburn Generator and Starter. From Toomer's Corner go north about 2 blocks and they're located on the left just before crossing he railroad tracks. Edd is the owner and he's rebuilt several Cruiser alternators for me over the years and has always done a good job. They give a 1 year warranty. Last couple I had done were $70 - 75.

And as aleady mentioned replaced all the battery cables with larger ones.

Jim,
It's funny you mention Ed, as he is the only person I trust in this town with my truck if I can't do the job or don't have resources/time. He can do alot more than just electrical work and always does what is needed with no fluff. He's even worked on my '93 Volkswagen Eurovan. He rebuilt my starter on my cruiser about a year ago.

Thanks for all the advice, i definately think im gonna try and get ahold of David at Urban Land Cruisers and try to get his wiring harness, and i will check out Ed here in Auburn also

Have you tried replacing your votage regulator? I had the same problems you've been describing, and a new VR fixed the problem.

There are only a few primary grounds used on these trucks. A little PMCS on them and the main ground off the battery can do a world of good when looking for lost volts. After that replacing the battery cables with some lower gauge new cables can help. Next I would look at individual circuits that seem faulty. A simple multimeter and even a haynes manual is all you need to trouble shoot the entire electrical system (I've done it on a 62 so the 60 should be cake).
