My 98 lx470 has this vibration when I accelerate and turn from a stop (like a left turn at a light). Anyone know what the cause of it is? It feels like something from the driveline. It only does it while turning. Thanks!

Make sure you don't have you center diffential locked. I've heard of people who are unfirmiliar with the CDL leaving it on and causing major damage.

Could be traction control or minor binding of drivetrain. I know our GX kind of vibrates (I guess you could call it that) when turning fairly sharply from a stop - pretty sure its binding. My LC does not do this.

No TC in the 98. Vibration is from a bad shock. One of your front shocks is beyond gone. Check tires first then the shocks. You should be able to feel more vibration comig from the left or right front. Check that side first.

That is my guess. I seriously doubt you have control arm issues i.e. bushings.

ack shocks. After 197K miles, I suppose its about time. Does anyone know what the price range is to replace the shocks on an LX or LC?? I have a feeling it isnt going to be cheap

Well, the LX uses hydro suspension, which is about $2K

That said, at 197K, I'd be more inclined to think it was a cv-joint. Is it a vibration, or more of a 'popping' sound?

Oh, and actually, the 98 and 99 LX's do have some sort of limited slip traction control.

If you don't want the hydro suspension, I think you can just replace it with standard LC springs and shocks for quite a bit cheaper. (if that turns out to be the culprit)

definitely a vibration. For 2K, I'll just leave it and deal with it. The LX probably isnt worth a whole hell of a lot, so the money isnt quite justifiable. Suspension actually feels OK to me.

I dont think my LX has any electronic traction control. There's nothing in the manual about it. Maybe the later ones?? Or were you referring to mechanical?

The 98's and 99's has a mechanical limited slip.

Like I said, I'm not so sure it is your suspension. Take it to a dealership or mechanic and have them look at it. Then you can decide if it's worth spending your money on, or if you can do it yourself.

If it is your suspension, like I said you can swap it out for a standard 100 series LC suspension for probably less than $400, if you do the labor yourself and get a good deal on the springs and shocks (i.e. used springs from this board, shocks from Cruiserdan).

I agree, I'd have it looked at and at least get the cost before ruling repair out all together. You never know!

By the way that is the highest mileage that I have heard of on a 100; congrats!! You must really keep it on the road!

its a hand me down from my parents. They were getting rid of it, and my lease was up on my other SUV, so I figured why not. They put a lot of highway mileage on the LX. Still runs well, doesnt seem to have the power as a newer one, but still more comfortable to go long distance than my MB C32. No major malfuntions either. I will definitely buy another LX when (IF) this one ever quits on me.

I'm not the type to take it to the dealer, but the brakes have been sticking when I release it, so the next time it needs brakes, Im taking it to a dealer and give them the whole damn list to look over.

perhaps you should just get it checked to be on the safe side if not by a dealer then by an independent shop. at that mileage, it's good to have a checkup done just to ensure everything is in working order.
you mentioned have a c32. owning a benz and not frequenting the dealer seems like an oxymoron :)
j/k !
good luck and keep us posted.

the benz is under warranty though, so that thing gets to the dealer every time I hear a funny rattle!!! :)

The only reason I recommended taking it to a Lexus dealer is they will have more knowledge of the hydro suspension than most independent mechanics, if that is what it turns out to be.

I'm not really sold on the suspension diagnosis, though, mainly because I've never experienced anything like that.

Search the posts here for vibration. Someone (I think Hank) copied the FSM diagnosis word for word. Now this was for a LC, but I feel pretty certain it would apply to the LX even with hydro. First was to check tires i.e. balance and structural issues. Second was to check shocks. I had a very similar vibration. When I took ff the shocks to do my lift, the shock that was on the side of the fealt vibration was completely dead---as in my 2 year old son could compress it.

I would check a dealer price for a replacement shock. I seriously doubt it will be 2k. Do you have the FSM? If not, pay the 10.00 to access the Toyota site and see what the diagnosis steps are for a steering vibration.

I would have a very hard time believeing that any shock, hydro or not, could take 197k miles without replacement.

Good luck.

The 2K was for the lexus hydro, and I said that based on others reports on here of what they paid when things went bad (actuators and the like).

Just seems weird to me that a bad shock would cause a vibration like that but not at speed, but I can't argue against facts and your actual experience.

its not coming from the steering wheel, but feels underneath the drivers seat. Possibly from the transfer case? 98LXand99LC's suggestion about the center lock was good, but my LX doesnt have the center lock option, just the H-N-L lever.

Thanks for all the great suggestions, once again, this board is great and full of helpful ideas.

The center diff lock is a button on the dash, just to the right of the steering column.

Looks like this:

You should have it.

hahaha, oops, you're right, I do have one of those!!!! I just ran out to look.

shows you all how much of a highway queen it is!!!
