This is a service bulletin, not necessarily a recall. It tells how the service technician should go about fixing the problem, I believe. I am going to call the Toyota Dealership to see if they are doing anything about it. If you call to see if this is covered on your vehicle, you will need your VIN #.

The TSB originates from Toyota and your Toyota dealer will be able to find it. Will they pay for it to be fixed is another ?

I too have the exhaust rattle on my 99. Looks like I'm heading to Lowes today!

whats worse is i took two small clamps and put them together to stop the rattling of the driver side shield, worked great....three weeks later now my pass side is rattling! Im going to go get 6 big clamps and clamp the crap out of my shields
i have a rattle that sounds like what you are describing yet after checking the heat shields i cannot figure out where it is coming from. i posted a thread a little while back with minimal results, can anybody help me?

when i originally checked my heat shields by hitting various places and listening for vibrations i couldnt pinpoint it. So I waited till I had a second in the morning when the truck was cold and started the motor. At the slightly elevated idle speed during cold-start the shields rattled, and i just got under and squeezed them quiet, which I then just clamped it.

here's what I did to check heat shield rattle
I got on my knees took a broomstick and placed it on the heat shield with one hand and hit the accellerator with the other...I could tell from the rattle and simultaneous vibration of the stick that it was the heat shield. I went with the advice on this thread and the clamps worked great...

I've been using the hose clamp trick for the last 7 or 8 years on my '94 FJ80. In upstate NY, the clamps rust thru each year and have to be replaced. At least it's an easy solution to install... Tried using muffler cement once to secure the shields to the connection flanges of the cat. That didn't last for more than a week. So back to the hose clamps until someone comes up with something a little more clever.
Good suggestion. I'll try to find them online or maybe at a local boat dealer. For the summer here I'm getting away with a long spring that keeps the shield pulled towards one side and keeps it quiet. But I'll try to find the clamps before the winter since the springs probably won't last more than a few weeks once the weather turns...
I noticed a loud vibrating sound when driving through the canyons last weekend with my window down. It was random and did not occur under heavy loads, just when I was crusing. I just put a house clamp around each cat shield. Hopefully it will slience it! I will know tomorrow.
I high centered my 04 in the snow a while back and it's been happening to me ever since. One day I hit up a drive through and the woman on the speaker box couldn't hear me over the vibrating, embarrassing. (No really, I don't have a hoopdee). I had guessed I loosened something up but I had no idea what. Time to pick up some hose clamps.
After a couple of days of drving, the vibrating has stopped, so it appears the hose clamps did their job! My 99 only has 85K miles on it, making me think that most owners should just do this to prevent it from occuring in the first place.
Mine was similar. An intermittent metallic 'buzz' on my Hundy, while accelerating, only while passing through about 1800 rpm, and only when cold. Disappeared after warm-up.
Here's where I found mine - the metal shield on rear of muffler, cracked under the lower mounting bolt you see in the pic. Found it with a 5 minute rubber-mallet tap session all the way down the exhaust system. Thought I'd find it at the cats, as suggested in foregoing posts, but nope, mine just had to be different. I'll replace it I guess, but for now, I just bent the shield slightly and viola - buzz is gone.

What is that thing inside the shield on the back there? It just seems to be a piece of metal - mine was completely detaching and bouncing around in there so I took it off. If it's important, I will replace but I have no idea what it's called.
All the items mentioned above have eliminated a lot of the rattling. found vibration on the motor cover any good fixes?
Can anyone tell me why it would be a bad idea to just take the damn heat shields off and just wrap them s***s with header wrap? If I'm not mistaken, this should work even better than the heat shields, allowing for less heat to escape under the car and actually helping along its intended path through the exhaust pipe? I bought some wrap. I'm gonna wrap and clamp them. This seems logical, less ghetto, and relatively cheap. Well not as cheap as making a mess with pink goop and a couple hose clamps. But for what I think is going to be the most effective solution, even an upgrade if you will, the price is right at your local auto parts store. Will post pics soon.
