Vibration after starter replaced?

Had my starter replaced in my 100 and I now have a vibration noticeable idling at stop lights or parking lots while in drive or reverse. The vibration is not present when idling in neutral.

I believe I’ve determined that the vibration goes away after driven for a while and warmed up. No other unusual noises or vibrations.

The mech did a diagnosis on the electrical system before replacing the starter (just to make sure nothing else was ready to die) and all was good. 134k miles on the odo and no other work done recently.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Someone will probably suggest taking off your engine cover. I also have a vibe now after doing my tb. I havent tried the cover yet though.

I had the exact thing happen - except for the starter - took off engine cover and it was gone. Like you it was only at certain temps and would stop after I drove for about 15-20 minutes.

Vacuum leak? How certain are you that the intake is seated back down correctly?

A good suggestion, will try this evening.

Great point, it's going back to the mechanic tomorrow. I was wondering the same thing, maybe the intake manifold wasn't torqued correctly or maybe a hose that wasn't reconnected properly.

I've ran the 100 with no vacuum hoses hooked up. Ran normal. I would still confirm.

I think your truck could cross the Amazon with no fuel, no battery, and bald tires. :-)

I haven't had any work done but I do have a rumble in the same scenario. When stopped and in gear, there's a low growl (no vibration to speak of) that goes away if in neutral or when I start moving.

Thanks to all that recommended I remove the engine cover. I've now tested this theory twice with a "cold" engine and no vibration. With cover off I've had no problems. Amazing. I'll continue testing this and see what happens. I'll report back.

Thanks again.

No theory, fact that the cover will vibrate at low idle RPM (ie in gear, foot on brake, no AC). Seems to be a foam block that isolates the cover from the engines RHS plenum and plumbing, as this ages and compresses it doesn't isolate very well and the engine cover finds a resonant freq around that 600 RPM mark. A couple of 1/4" rubber grommets between the shroud and mounting brackets fixes the problem too if you prefer to leave the cover on.

Good idea with the rubber grommets! Thank you. Will pick some up this weekend as I prefer the cover on the engine and not in my already full garage.

I have this same issue whether the cover is on or not. I am pretty sure it's the motor mounts. I think 2000uzj has the same problem.

How many miles on yours?

I don't recall having this issue in months, it stopped right after a muffler change. Could the OEM muffler be causing a resonation with too much back pressure? Seems like soot could build up inside and cause a irregular flow.

hmm that's interesting that yours is fixed, maybe I need to try that too. I have traced the noise and its right around the engine somewhere. It usually only resonates when I'm idling in drive with the AC on.

haha I have 157k also. Wow we really are twinkies

I stopped by Lowe's this weekend and picked up four fender washer sized rubber washers. You'll find them in the hardware section -look in the specialty fastener/automotive bin. I elected to go with these versus a more traditional grommet as I thought the thickness would be problematic based on Lowe's inventory. I didn't want to replace the two OEM nuts and two bolts to accommodation thick grommets.

They seem to work perfectly thus far; no engine cover related vibrations when the engine is cold and in Drive or Neutral. I hold off on 100% judgement until the weather and temps turns colder again (30's versus the mi/high 50's and 60's) just to make sure colder temps aren't a factor.

So far, so good. Thanks for the suggestions folks.
