Hey ya'll -

Is there a thread somewhere that lists various parts that interchange across platforms?

I've heard some struts / springs and shocks interchange between Tacos, LCs, 4Runners and the GX470.

What about wheels? Sway bars? Step bars / rock sliders? Bumpers?

Are we talking only OEM?

All 6 lug - 17in OEM wheels will fit the gx470 but not 16in 6 lug rims, the bolt pattern is the same but they rub the calipers so you need to shave down the calipers to make 16in rims work without rubbing, it has been done with success, depends how committed you are to a 16in rim, most people don't do it.

'04-'09 4th gen 4 runner side steps and rock sliders both fit on the gx470 but they are a bit too short by a few inches. Technically sliders are all proprietary per platform, if you want correct fitment...you CAN run them but they wont be the right legnth. Unless you got a sweet deal just buy gx sliders for your gx.

Bumpers im not 100% sure but chances are, same as above, they wont fit correctly, typically they are platform specific like sliders.

Sway bars, are the same on the gx and '04-'09 4th gen 4 Runner

You can go to your Lexus dealer website and look up the part number of the item you want. Then go to a Toyota dealer website and enter the part number. Most, not all, Toyota dealer websites will have a button which will give you a list of compatible Toyota vehicles. You can do this on Ebay as well, but I have more faith in the Toyota dealers providing the correct info.

5th gen 4Runner rock sliders will fit a GX with some modifications. See my build thread for info on how I did mine (linked in my signature). They are also the correct length. The 5th gen 4Runner sliders are also cheaper than 470 sliders, which I why I did it that way (saved around $300).

The vast majority of suspension/brake/engine/drivetrain parts will direct interchange with a V8 4Runner of the same year, but, as mentioned above, check it by looking up the part number on the Lexus website and verifying it is the same as the 4Runner part number on the Toyota website. 4th gen 4Runner exhausts will also interchange, 5th gen is pretty close but requires cutting/welding of the hangers and shortening of the system length.

For shocks/springs, you always run the risk of not having the ride height correct with mixing and matching between platforms. If buying new, just order them for your GX470 (since you have a heavy iron block V8, relative to the aluminum V6 in the other rides). If buying used, there should be good interchange between a 4th gen T4R, 05+ Tacoma, and even 5th gen 4Runner, but you'll need to do some more digging to verify (for example the rear shocks and front shocks are a close fit but require some minor mods).

Overall I've had decent luck putting non-470 upgraded parts on my 470 (rock sliders and exhaust). However I wouldn't bank on things interchanging them unless you have the tools an desire to modify them to get them to fit (i.e., having to slice up a $650 Borla exhaust like I did). If you don't want to modify, just buy stuff for a 470 and pay a bit more.

Yes, for many parts they are exactly the same. For instance look up something like a lower control arm or a starter for a GX470 and a V8 4Runner of the same year - they should have the same number. Every OEM part I've purchased (whether Toyota or Lexus) has both the Toyota and Lexus logos on the box.

@Rednexus Are you saying that Toyota and Lexus use the same part numbers?
They are the same company afterall :p. Lexus and Toyota are on the boxes of every part. Pure Lexus parts do exist, but they are not for the common mechanicals. Body trim, etc. come pure Lexus. Basically, if you see a part in a Toyota Lexus box it fits something on both sides. If it is just Lexus it is only for a Lexus. There are so many mechanical crossover parts on a GX470 it will blow your mind. The Prado parts from partsouq will truly mess with your head if you match the year and frame type to your GX470. I haven't had a single thing from a Prado 120 not bolt onto the GX470 aside from clearly different parts like engine, etc. SO much crossover. The 4th gen limited v8 awd from 03-09 is a GX with a 4Runner body and a different transfer case (electronic).

I'm new here and not sure if I'm posting this correctly but I have a question. I have a 2006 GX470 with air suspension. I was told by the shop I need to buy OEM control arms for my GX that are "compatible" with air suspension. I'm not sure what the LCA's have to do with the air suspension? How are those parts different. I do see listings for LCA's without air suspension and they're 1/2 the cost. Here are my questions: 1. can I use non air suspension LCA's? 2. What is special about the LCA's for air suspension? I was quoted $2600 to replace both LCA's..$800 each part and $400 labor each. Insane.

Sorry I failed to mention that these are front Lower control arms.

The front does not have air suspension, so the front LCA is the same for a GX and a 4Runner....with the exception of a KDSS GX. If you have KDSS, you need a KDSS-specific LCA.

The rear LCAs are different between a GX with air suspension and a 4Runner without, since they have a small tab on the LCAs for the ride height sensor.

Your price quote is (IMO), a ripoff. New OEM non-KDSS Toyota LCAs are around $330 per side (around $500 per side for KDSS LCAs) and it's maybe 1 hour of time to replace them. Then an alignment afterwards. However, the cost might go up if your alignment cams are seized (likely in MN), which would require them to be sawzall'd out and replaced with new OEM cams (around $250-300), adding maybe an hour more labor per side. I'd get 2nd opinions from different shops.

Thank you so much! A few follow up questions for you. How would I know if it’s KDSS and what does that stand for? If I needed those bolts, is that a common part to order?

You should be able to see if you have KDSS by looking down the framerail of your GX and seeing if it has the pumps/lines. Photos of the KDSS system should be avaialble on Google. You might also be able to put your VIN in, either at a dealer or online Lexus parts website, and see if it pulls up KDSS or non-KDSS LCAs.

Regarding the alignment cams, they are dealer-only parts but are readily available. I replaced around half of mine on my MO GX at 135K. I'd be very surprised if at least some are not seized. If you need to replace everything it is relatively expensive. I just ordered the parts for an '07 4Runner from my local Toyota dealer and they fit fine. Make sure the shop coats everything in anti-seize upon assembly to reduce the chance of them seizing again. Annual alignments will also reduce the chance of seizing as well.

Put in the Lexus part, or the Toyota part.... ToyoDIY.com - https://www.toyodiy.com/parts/xref
Here's what Lexus says about my specific model: Front Independent Double Wishbone Suspension Rear Adj. Height Control (RAHC) w/Auto-Leveling Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS). That means no KDSS, right? I also don't see the light come on when I turn the key but I do have to check with my eyeballs still.

Sounds like you don't have KDSS, but definitely check for the pump on the outside of the frame rail, per previous post. You literally can't miss it if it's there.

FYI, you can get non-KDSS Moog LCA's from Rock Auto for like $165 or so. I've been running a set for 2 years and they are fine. Kind of wish I had gone with OEM Toyota LCAs as they will probably last longer, but Moogs have done fine so far.

Thank you so much. Any referrals for the OEM version? What site has the best pricing etc.?

Lots of online dealers sell Toyota stuff. McGeorge Toyota, Olathe Toyota, and Bell Lexus are usually the cheapest (selling parts ~20% below Toyota MSRP), but my local dealer, Bommarito Toyota, also sells well below MSRP, so I usually buy from them and pick the parts up in-person. The other dealers around here all sell at MSRP, so I don't use them. Dealer shipping costs are usually pretty high so I prefer getting stuff locally whenever possible.

Avoid buying "OEM" parts from non-dealer sources. Lots of "OEM" stuff on Amazon and eBay is counterfeit.

Super helpful, thank you!
