After joining a few months ago and spending countless hours reading various thread history's, I feel I am starting to get a handle on the quirks of this platform.
A little background about me, I have been in the used car business for 10 years and fix all our purchase's. In house we do everything from light bulbs to transmission rebuilds.
I have gained much insight from others on this forum and hope to give back as well. If anyone is in the central Texas area, we are an hour north of Austin and need any advice or just BS time about our rides or passing thru please feel free to PM me. Pretty well kitted up for most issue's.
So hi to all, and now on to my issue.

I have got the strangest noise on my 2000 Lexus LX 470. It was not there when I bought it, it has gone from random to always there. Its a very strange noise that can only be described as "whooping" or "air" noise it builds in pitch and intensity as speed increases. It will happen also right after I let up on the throttle. I can make it happen at idle only around red line. If starting from a stop, it builds up to the shift points and then goes back to almost gone till RPM's build again. I took off serpentine belt and could not replicate.
So a few observations, Its rotational of engine, but not vehicle. I have replaced serpentine bet with new tensioner assembly. Upper idler pulley also. On other vehicles I would say vacuum leak and chase that down.

I do not think I have a vacuum leak as my fuel trims are flat, my O2's do not run out of spec to suggest a leak either. While I can, I have not run a smoke test to look for leaks.
I am not due for a timing belt, the previous owner had it done in 2012 at 40k miles ago. I am down to the point of doing the timing belt and water pump just to get a baseline and rule that out. Am i just running with my blinders on and its vacuum leak?
Anyone want to toss out some ideas?

Standing in front of engine and revving the rpm's up the sound seems to be echoing from under the engine at the front. It is clearly loud enough to be heard at highway speed with the radio off. Another friend that rode with me stated it sounded like air rushing thru small opening, yet also does it in park, so i am perplexed. Currently not my daily so I have time to chase it down. I do not like being skunked by noises on cars.
 
Biggest thing you mentioned is that it happens while in park. That rules out any kind of wind rushing issue and should really cut down on your testing.

I wish I could be more help in locating it. I have a bit of a rushing sound while accelerating as well, but it's only while moving and from the rear of my truck. I think it's actually an early exhaust leak.

Without personally hearing the sound, tough to say. However, based on the above quote plus the fact that the noise went away with serp belt off, it could be a bearing in any of the following: alternator, fan bracket, PS pump, or AC compressor. Timing belt idler pulleys can be ruled out since the sound wasn't present when the serp belt was off. Bad bearings don't always chirp and often "groan" when bad, varying in intensity with RPMs. Listening from inside the cab while driving could muffle the noise to an "air-like" sound. Can easily pinpoint a bad bearing with a mechanic's stethoscope and someone revving the engine while you investigate.
 
Just fixed a similar sound on mine by replacing the fan clutch.
Once pulled, found the bearings to be shot on the old one. Couldn't tell previously.
Searched the forum for the answer, otherwise I'd still be looking for a vacuum leak.
 
PDPerry, Thank you for your reply. Totally forgot to come and update my post so in fact others who search can see the answers
In the end I also replaced my fan clutch and all the noise was gone. Best guess it was an internal issue and the fan clutch was toasted.
