Is there a write-up on converting a one piece 4 speed transfer case from manual to vacuum shift?

I've been searching with out much luck.

Hoping to retain the vacuum shift when swapping an H42 4 speed tranny/transfer into the 45.

Any information is greatly appreciated.

shouldn't be that hard, the vacuum actuator will bolt in place on the nose cone. you will need to extend the hoses and also extend the linkage for hi-N-lo

Other markets got a vacuum shift 4WD for many years including four speeds. Just like the manual shift was always available I believe the 40/45 always had both options. Only issue might be the size if the vacuum shift diaphragm clearing the transmission cover being that it's three and half inches further back. The only difference between the FJ40 and FJ45LP in 65 was the 45 was longer in the back.

I run the vacuum shift with the H42 in my lwb. I bent the two metal tubes for the vacuum back from a 90degree to a 45 and extended the hi lo rod in the forward section. Both the speedo and parking brake cables still reach, but they're close.

Good timing. I need to go unlock my hubs from the drive into Ridgecrest out of Red Rock yesterday.

Best

Torque tube behind the transfer case in the FJ40 is further back in the 45. While it fits in the FJ40 it's tight with the hand brake. That won't be a problem in the 45. The transmission cover being a little longer should help too.

Vacuum transfer on the H55 in my BJ74. Also on my RJ22 back in the day.
