Complete engine with ECM came from a '93 Caprice that was a taxi in Alaska in it's former life. ECM was 16136965. Not sure of the difference between standard and cop tbi units. I'm thinking someone just popped the bigger injectors in without doing anything else, but I'm not sure. I put a stockish cam, roller lifters, and pistons in it. Stock intake and exhaust manifolds. Wish I would have souped it up some at the time!

ahh...just wondering...this weekend I'm putting on a system from a 91 Caprice Cop car. I've got an RV cam in mine, ramhorns...so a little over stock, not much. So my ECM should be able to handle that good...

HIJACK over :D

I think so too. My main problem was using a stock ECM with bigger injectors.

ps - I think I fried my ECM when I welded my roll cage frame tie-ins! Had to hunt up a different one. I now have 16196396 from a '94 truck 350 w/manual. Doesn't control the purge canister but the same otherwise.

hijack really over now, right? :D

Rams horn manifolds
y - pipe
single exhaust

Belive it or not when I had headers and duels on mine I had the same thing.

I've got headers and duals and no exhaust smell. Did you do anything else when you changed exhaust? Were your duals exiting in front of the rear tires?

Switch to Propane and never look back:D

fastjim11, has the most likely cause. Check your compression and head seal. My BB in the burb was pushing stinky air in the cab. Once I fixed the head gasket, it was fine. That truck has stock everything and a was running a new cat when the gasket went bad.

What type of milage can you expect (with a 350 under the hood)? I wanted to run gas to the trail and propane while wheel'n.

Burnt coolant has a very distinctive smell.......it smells like burning antifreeze........go figure.....

How pleasant is the smell of burnt propane??? Will his wife, kids and dogs like it??? How much will it cost him to convert as opposed to simply fixing what he has now and if his headgasket is blown how will propane fix it?

seeing any smoke?

My runs awesome, but stinks...and smokes a little on idle at a stoplight....I'm replacing the valve seals. My engine only has 3,000miles on a rebuild...but it sat for almost 5 years :frown:

Needless to say, I want to fix that issue. maybe a thought.

Stinkyness

Wow – thanks for all the responses. I have lots to look for. This weekend (after I finish the OME install) I plan to mess around with metering rods in the carb. If that doesn’t help I’ll work my way through the from easiest to most difficult.

The smell is not the burned coolant smell, and I don’t see any smoke except when I light up the tires. I know, silly, but they are really crappy tires, almost gone and I plan on new ones with the new suspension anyhow. I’ve never had a situation where I have a rig that will smoke them AND that I want to use them up. With the top off and a torquey 383 up front it really fries the tiny little things. My kids think I am cool. Wife and clients (I am a CPA) not so much.

The leaky head or other leak business does concern me. I am not really in the mood to tear the thing apart. I suppose I could go to a shop and hook it up to an exhaust analyzer of some sort. Anyone know if that might clue me in? This thing has been worked on by only me since I bought it several years ago.

I’ll consider an exhaust re-route, but I’d sure like to get it running properly first.

Maybe someone mentioned this and if so sorry for the repost...

If the exhaust is not exiting the side of the vehicle, and it is exiting the rear of the vehicle you will be much more likely to breath in the good stuff because of the voo-doo vortex that happens behind the rig as it goes down the road.

seriously, if it exits the rear and not behind the tire to the side, you will have a lot more fumes!

I can't say that your engine is or is not is good shape ... but I sure had the same problem with my 2F. It was VERY bad. My exhaust pipe was straight to the back. I did like most of the guys here, cut it and change the exit to the driver's side at the back of the tire. I never had ANY problem after that.

good luck

Here is a closeup of the exhaust. One exits on each side of the vehicle, behind the rear tires. I have been over every inch of the exhaust and have not found any leaks on the exhaust itself. The fragrance is definitely a problem.

I drove my old Ford today for comparison and actually got down and sniffed the exhaust. (Please, no comments about a  in the tailpipe - apologies to Eddie Murphy). Of course, as I was on the ground with my face in the exhaust pipe, my receptionist drove up. I half expect her resignation to appear sometime soon.

The thing smelled like exhaust. My FJ40 smells like the unburned fuel mentioned above. So I suspect I have an internal problem (carb, gasket, rings, valves).

I have finally made some improvements to my smelly situation. First of all, I took the carb off and really worked it over. I leaned it out as much as I dared (avoiding overheating) and made sure everything else was set-up right. There is a local guy here (Mike at Mike's auto parts) who is a carb master. I owe him big-time.

But, before I did this, I changed the metering rods and made it as rich as possible. Then, I had a gullible friend drive it while I followed in the safety of my other car and looked at the awful black smoke to see where it was going.

Once I saw what was happening, I installed two extremely dorky exhaust tips which have a little bend in them. I aimed them out the back at an angle and now, with the leaned carb, I can actually drive without watery eyes. I suspect it will be even better once I put the top on tonight!

I can't make my camera load, but I'll try to add pics of the exhaust tips for your viewing pleasure.

Now, it is time for a

I'd like to see where you ended having the exhaust come out as my FJ makes me feel like I'm peeling onions every time I drive it!

Thanks, Scott

I can't believe you still drive with the top off!! Had to put mine on a couple weeks ago.... low 30's is too cold for me in the morning.

Finally, here are pics of the cheesy pipe ends which seem to have really helped. Good luck.

I got my new exhaust as well and no more fumes in the cab. The old exhaust was really loose at the manifolds. I have a V8. Used a recommended place in Claremont NH called Mornignside Auto and they did a really good job. They brought the Pside pipe across and connected to the Dside pipe then ran it down in basically the stock position, turning out just behind the Dside rear spring hanger and sticking straight out. .

It's nice to not get nauseous while driving. :)

Resurrection of a stinky old thread - Spark Plug Gap?

As it has warmed up (and I have finished up with the whole steering issue) I drove the Cruiser the other day and returned home smelling bad. I spoke to a hot rod buddy who suggested MSD ignition, which got me thinking about the ignition. So, I pulled the spark plugs and what do you know, it looks like they are all gapped randomly. Gaps from .03 to .08. That cannot be right.

So, any suggestions would be appreciated. I've got a 383 (350 with 400 Crank, etc) with a 600 Edelbrock, fairly mild cam and HEI. What gap do you folks suggest. Hot rod buddy says .045. I hope that this might help me out.

Now I've got newly tight steering, better brakes, nice suspension and shocks but the stupid thing still stinks.

I have a 63 Ford with a 390 that smells almost sweet in comparison. I don't expect it to smell like the wife's new car, but it ought to be better (or at least as good) as the old Ford.

So, any suggestions on the GAP and/or adding something like an MSD ignition. Seems like a bunch of hooey for $200.

Happy June. Summer comes. Time to wheel.
