Thanks. Here's the rig.https://wenatchee.craigslist.org/cto/5044393559.html

If everything checks out and price is right, could be a neat rig. I can get it for quite a bit less than that CL asking price. It's got a few spots of rust, but what's been described/pictured seems repairable enough. The ad is also wrong - the conversion is a 5.3 vortec not a 6.0. The conversion was done 2 years ago by Torfab, and he also did lots of other stuff menchanically to get it up to snuff. Also - sound deadener, new carpet, new headliner, BMW leather seats, OME suspension, and more. I traded notes with Tor and he remembers the truck, although he didn't recall any rust, he said it is a killer truck (maybe he is biased? :) I'd like V8 power but I am not really inclined to inherit somebody's conversion unless "professsionally" done, and Torfab's reputation for these seems among the best. I got all the receipts on it from Tors work and was $30K worth of work, not to mention truck is worth $4-5k stand alone. The problem is the truck is in the middle of nowhere WA state...making a fly and drive even challenging, so trying to get someone to lay eyes on it. Anyone have connections in Wenatchee WA? :)

The pictures in the ad link show rust??

Maybe it me but you can get a lot more Land Cruiser for 20K.

Perhaps. But if end goal is a 62 with a very reputable/reliable, no issues Vortec conversion, with decent list of mods/customizations - what's a good $value? Hey - I am as much of a rust snob as anyone. But from what Tor remembers, and what close up pics show - the rust is as repairable as any other panel/paint issue. So what's the truck value?

Base 62 with couple of spots of paint/panel rust worth - 175K miles - perhaps value of $5k conservatively
$30K worth of Torfab v8 conversion, maint, OME susp, other customization - perhaps call it half of what owner spent ($30K) with Tor - so $15K

If truck can be had for $15K seems like a decent deal, if this is what someone is looking for :) I realize it's not white, perhaps that could influence one's perception of value.

I respect your quest for value but just because someone spends $xxxxxxx should not have any bearing on its future value unless your plan is to part it out. Parting out would not pertain to the listed vehicle.

In the past I have owned and built a V8 60 series (put a 175K on the conversion) and a V8 40 series (now owned by Murf) and very rarely you get anything close to what you put in.

Search BMan old built 60 series and he spent years trying to get 1/2 of what the vehicle above is going for.

The price would make more sense if you plan to keep it for the rest of your life. I can tell you when it comes to highly modified vehicle the market is very narrow and you hope for that one person to come along.

I agree you never get $ what you put into for any mod. The seller has $38k invested in last 2 years. $15k is 39% of that. Value or good deal or not I guess is all relative. Goodness know I have a habit of over paying :)

Been there

Example - When I purchased the pictured vehicle it had $35K in receipts for mods not including the cost of the vehicle. I paid nothing close to what they had in it and when I sold it I got nothing close to what they out in it. It was a cool Land Cruiser though.

Indeed nice Cruiser! So $35K in mods, call it $7K for base - $42K total. Do you recall what you paid or sold it for?

First CSC member to run 37" tires on a 80 10+ years ago?

Ask Murf if there is any way he could reproduce his 40 (with his resources) anywhere close to what he paid.

Market value in the end no matter what it cost you to build.

After reading this thread, I clearly shouldve offered much less to you Phil :flipoff2:

Naw...in reality, to recreate my 40 now would be very expensive not to mention the value of the time spent in the process. I always believe its better to buy seomone elses finished project. Just ask my detail manager trying to sell his beautiful 1938 Pontiac resto-modded coupe - no one is even looking because he is trying to get something reasonable. I am very happy with the 40, super happy I got it, and realize that if you want something then its worth more to you than someone else.

LCGeek, I applaud your attempts to get someone to look at it but agree with others you are in the drivers seat and to proceed with patience. Is it me or does it appear that there is what looks to be a sizeable oil leak under the truck? in the end, do what youre comfortable with - but budget on spending more on getting it to where you would want it. Dont blow your whole budget on just the purchase, I can point out time after time when people buy older units, "Fixed up" or not, there is always plenty of more work to do on it that reveals itself soon enough.

Sorry for the hijack LCGeek but I have to call out Phil on this one!

What gives? Its everything you  about :

  • Its not "white"
  • Its Supercharged - OMG !
  • It looks heavy and not the "light way"
  • Did I mention, its not white?
:poof:

And it got sold for all those transgressions.:slap:

I would talk to Rockjock about a vortec swap on a 62 if that is what you want, he has done some really nice work on 80 swaps. You should also be able to get a local 62 without rust for a good price if you're patient.

When I value modded vehicles I kind of look at it like this.
So what if it has 33" tires that cost $1200. I expect any vehicle to have tires, the cost of 33"'s over stock size is about $40 per tire, so value to me would be 4x$40= $160, not 1200.

I heard that it was because you buffed through the paint. Who DOES that!?
