Looking for recommendations on which trails at Uwharrie would be a good match for a newbie with a stock GX460 to explore? Specifically looking for trails where lots of ground clearance isn't required.

Thx

Any trial that starts w/ a D is advanced, so you will want to stay off of Daniel, Dickey Bell, & Dutch John. I wouldn't want to go on any trail out there without rock sliders. Once you have sliders, you should be good on anything but the 3 I mentioned. That's my opinion at least

but the trails aren't open till April.

Sliders aren’t a prerequisite but they’ll give peace of mind and will probably be cheaper than any damage you might do to your running boards or rocker panels. Seriously. It’s really easy to rack up a bill out there, even on the easy trails. Going with another truck is always a good idea for safety but also so you’ll have a spotter; it’s more important if you’re new to this.

Lots of us frequently post up here before we’re gonna hit URE. You’re always welcome to join or post your own trip. Odds are good that one of us will be happy to join you once they open up in April.

What part of NC are you in?

Cheers, thanks for the info. I would love to tag along one of your trips sometime. I'm in Apex (outside Raleigh)

I've done all the trails except Daniel in my 2" lifted (but otherwise stock) HZJ77 with 285/75R16 tires. We also took my friend's bone stock LR Discovery 2 on the same trails on regular highway tires. Another group of friends took a stock rental Jeep JK on highway tires up the hard side of dickey bell without any issues. Having someone who knows the trails, or is at least a good spotter is the best thing you can do.

All of the beginner trails are pretty easy, and don't have any big rock issues. So sliders would be nice, but aren't necessary. It mostly depends on your previous offroad experience.

Come out to the RDU-area meeting (really just food and beers along with parking lot gawking) tonight, provided you’re fine with gatherings during covid. Sometimes people have even just come out to chat in the lot before everyone else moves inside, even pre-covid. There’s a thread in the sticky section at the top of our clubhouse page.

Im in CLT, so I won’t be there, but you’ll be welcomed just the same.

Thanks, I def plan to come to a meeting at some point, would love to check out all the rigs although the mod-envy may be too much for me to handle!

I'll be there and we have a few others confirmed. @xychromosome I know it's last minute, but the monthly club meeting in Raleigh (1st Wed of the month) is a great way to get plugged in. We'll be at Backyard Bistro at 7pm tonight

To add to Pip's comment, the trails do tend to change w/ erosion and/or maintenance. You can go one year and a bunny trail is super easy, but the following year or a few months down the road, sections could become gnarly due to erosion. You can go on a trail that was formerly gnarly and now they've filled it in and looks like a dirt road.

You will definitely want to remove running boards at the minimum. Again, just my $0.02.

Chromosome, change your DNA by attending one of these RECREATIONAL & TRAVEL - https://overlandexperts.com/training-programs/recreational/?v=893f26889d1e in Uwharrie. Stock vehicles very welcome.
I took your advice and attended a class with overlandexperts, at their Orange VA location. Was a great experience and I learnt a lot about the capabilities and limitations of my truck. Highlight of the day was taking one of their 80 series out on some of their courses, lots of fun.

@xychromosome we have the Meet and Greet this weekend. You could hit the trails with some veterans and meet most of the club.

Thanks for the invite. I'm actually headed to the OBX and will be doing some beach driving out there this weekend and the following week. I would love to join one of your future events so will keep and eye on this forum.

We are in Holly Springs, 15 minutes south of you, and head to Fort Fisher for day trips all the time.

Nice. Went to Fort Fisher myself a few weeks ago, would have been better if it was warmer! Looking forward to heading ack down there over the summer.
