Using ankle/wrist weights as winch line dampner?

This may be a dumb question, but instead of buying another ARB winch line dampener, could I use a couple of old ankle/wrist weights as extra dampeners? They have 10lbs of weight in a nylon 'sheath' with a velcro fastener. A little red neckish, but I think they'd do the job.
 
That's extra weight to carry, no pun intended. It's not about the weight so much as destroying the
inherent tension in the line. Just use a blanket or a heavy jacket. But your ankle weight idea is
good for sure.
 
Have a couple old sleeping bags that are good for about nothing else I carry for pad to use to lay on for a trail repair, extra padding under good sleeping bag or on winch cable.
