My 1989 FJ62 just had a rod go out on the engine. I am considering getting a used 3FE from Japan with supposedly 30K to 40K miles on it. Has anyone had any experience with used engines from Japan? They sound good. But I would rather learn from the experience of others rather than by making my own mistakes.

I looked at this option and passed. You just do not know what you are getting.

I used to work for a DOT and w had trucks that sold with only 10k-50k on them. The problem was they were from Airports or jails or some other facility where they didn't move much but were left idlling for 8 plus hours a day.

I am just finishing a rebuild and had a long-block done for me by the cruiserparts.net guys and they did a good job. Doing it all my self and replacing every hose, fuel injctor, h20 pump, fan clutch, oil pump and more that I' can't think of right now and I'm into about $4500 or so (I did some other things as well so that number may be high).

Good Luck

BILL

I was looking in to 2f engines from Japan but they are very rare to find now. How much do they want for the engine? Considering how much it would be to rebuild yours if the price is good I would go for it. Make sure to do a compression test on it first. In ways a stock Toyota engine with low miles is a better option than a rebuilt one. The best longterm option I think is to have someone that knows how to rebuild engines do it with Toyota parts.

I just saw your name in the avatar. I'm in Southern Maryland , so if you need any help/advice/being laughed at let me know. And if you aren't on the 3fe use group get on it, motors do come up every so often (as a cheaper option).

I'm finishing up my rebuild this week. With my project, I am buildingh up a truck I'll use for the next 10 years or so (hopefully) and I probaly spent too much $$$.

Here in Panamá we get a lots of used engines and trannys from Japan .. most of them diesels for sure .. but the case are sell really cheap coz haven't any warranty.

$4,500 for a rebuilt engine? That's sounds very high, and it sounds like your doing the pulling and pushing yourself. What kind of warranty to Cruiserparts give you?

A mechanic buddy says generally the JDM engines are enough different to cause headaches installing them in US-spec vehicles. And the older ones (like 2 & 3F) don't meet US emissions standards. He advised me against it.

There are variations you will need to live with but if you take a compression test and it all checks out I'd go for it. That's what I'm using for the '67 FJ45LV. I did a compression test on the 3B diesel before I bought it and it tested out at 400 psi + on all cylinders cold. Spec is 420 and minimum is about 280 psi.

Thanks for the responses so far. There seems to be two schools of thought - stay away or go for it.

The engines are priced at $1700 with 30-40K miles. They come with compression tests and a 6 month warranty.

The price looks very good and the low mileage is very appealing. I have heard that in some cases it is hard to match the Japanese engines up with manifods and other parts. But I have not heard anything specific about the 3FE.

Mechanics around her tell me it is 1000 to 1500 plus some misc parts to swap the engine out. So I mam seriously thinking about it. I would really like to hear from someone else who has done this with a FJ60 or FJ62 though.

By the way Witchcock, I hate to disappoint you but the MD in MDCHIPS stands for Mike and Debbie. We live in Colorado Springs.

I would think the only real concern you'd have is emissions. If that stuff bolts up and is compatible with the new engine then go for it!

I thought 1700 is a good price .. anycase always is a chance .. bad engine, lucky thing ..

How is the price for a overhaul over there .. ?

in my case in 1999 when I do the complete overhaull for my 2H I send 3,756 USD only in parts .. engine parts, pistos, rings, precups etc ..

I bought a 22re ( supposedly 60K miles) for my truck several years ago and it was a headache...It was burning about a quart of oil every ten days...They asked what kind of oil (weight) I was using, I said 10w40, then they said it needed a valve adjustment...I kepy going back & forth on the phone with them...I finally gave up.

You might want try these guys, I've never used them, but someone here on Mud had...they are in Houston.
