you guys are all ridiculous elitists. If it is in good shape, that is a very decent truck for the money and you can't get a decent 93 for anywhere near that price.

$6500 ain't too far off...

when you consider the d-train differences (locks, disks, FF, FZFE, ABS) well worth it. 100k miles

...I'm equally suspicious of vehicles described as 'clean'. Saying these types of things, to me, are the same as saying you've got nothing better to say about the vehicle. An exceptional vehicle shouldn't be described as 'clean, with cold ac'. ;)

what a difference a year makes. not so long ago this board was blown away by someone getting a 91 at this price:

I am finding this blanket dismissal of the 3FE unit a little hard to take. How many of you guys have actually driven one for more than 15 minutes? If you think a $4500 80 is something to pass on as a waste of time, then I assume you guys must think that 60 series trucks should be straight in the crusher. different strokes for different folks guys. I agree a 93-97 is worth more but it depends on your budget and there are far more similarities than differences on these trucks. in fact, on a high mileage low cost vehicle a 3FE has a better chance of being problem free than an 1fz when you consider the head gasket.

that said I agree that any vehicle advertised using words like clean and cold AC deserves a careful inspection.

I would think about if this person (woman?) is willing to work on the truck themselves. A fulltime 4WD system and an older truck is not really appropriate as a DD unless it's being wheeled on the weekends OR the person likes to do some work themselves.

If it's just being driven around town and being serviced at the dealer, it could get expensive.

The 3FE isn't a bad motor. I think it is one of the great Toyota motors. However, since I drive a 3FE powered FJ80 everyday and we also have a 94 I think I'm qualified to comment on them. I would definitely say it is underpowered. There are two main flaws of the FJ80 to me, underpowered and underbraked.! The underpowered is more easily to deal with than the underbraked. The braking becomes more of an issue for inexperienced drivers. It is a heavy vehicle. It isn't a Honda Civic. For someone not accustom to a long braking distance it takes awhile to get used to. I think a 91 or 92 FJ80 is a value at $4500 for some people. If you aren't going to wheel it is great family transportation. As long as I'm on the braking thing I think it might be wise to consider ABS as a family transportation option. I sure love the ABS on those slippery mornings in the 94. So in my opinion maybe the brakes are more important for a family or my wife than whether or not it has power or lockers. Fj60s are the ultimate utilitarian wagon. I loved my FJ60. And the 2F is one of those motors that is tough to kill. You don't need to worry about computers in the old FJ60. If I was going to take a trip to Central America that would be my choice.

I would go and drive it and see what you think --

-- I like driving my '91 more than my '94 -- and my '89 has the same motor as my '94 --

-- give it a drive, take pics, and let us know what you think -- !!

PS - my '91 has 200K on it and is all original, lest a new radiator this past year -- it is not showing signs of impending maintenance, nor is the drivetrain "shaky" --

e

besides, too, the FZJs don't have vapor lock blowers that run after the engine is turned off --

-- i don't know why, but i just love mine -- :D

I make it a rule never to purchase vehicles that tout "cold ac".

Yeah, and that's R12 A/C, not R134a, so it'll cost $$ to recharge it.

I'd pass. For driving to work, get a honda civic or something economical, unless you have a huge wad of cash burning a hole in your pocket. Gasoline prices are only gonna rise in the future. Save the rig for recreation and hauling home boards from the lumber yard. My my honda prelude gets 30mpg easily, so I drive that instead of the rig. If I drove an LC80 at 13mpg, that's 923 gal of fuel to go 12K mi vs. 400 gal for the honda. At $2/gal, that's $1046 per year. If one drives the car for 240K mi, that's over $20K more in fuel alone, not to mention money lost in interest or increase in fuel prices.

Also, I'd doubt the PO replaced the alternator and such w/ factory OEM parts.
