i have a working theory on why my replaced upper rear hatch has not been latching (and also why my battery has been draining).
the first issue is the replacement hatch latch seems to have been missing a plastic "sheath" around the latching mechanism. i noticed this when i swapped out for the latch on my old upper hatch. the hatch is closing almost flush now and since i don't have a better explanation i am hypothesizing at this point the issue is this missing plastic piece.
the second part was my battery draining and i realized that i turned the interior down light to off when i started having this problem since i didn't want it to drain the battery.
but this kept me from seeing the rear door lamps were lit when the rear gatch was ajar.
i mean i went and remove the bulbs here at one point in troubleshooting so i am not totally sure if there was additional drain from the hatch being ajar or is there was another issue but for now i am putting the batrry drain down to the interior door lamps being on and my not realizing it.
