The truck stalled at idle at a stoplight, so i turned around to get it home. Then it stalled twice while running... so I slowed down to stop safely....steam, and them blammo!

I'm figuring a stuck thermostat...but could i be wrong?

Any other things to check, before I make a monday morning NAPA run?

Any info would help - TSH

make sure your radiater is not all gummed up. If i was you take it to a radiater shop and have it pressure tested why you are there and ask them to clean it. I noticed it looks a little iron oxicde looking. Then change your thermostat, gasket.and don forget to change that little oring that goes on top of the stat.

How did the thermostat gauge look after and before the explosion? Was very low or high?

What radiator cap are you running? I've been told 13 lbs is right for our application, and that's what I run.

A 13 lb cap should be good.

Hobo - I'd put a NEW rad cap on it along with the new hose and t'stat. The cap should have dumped the excess pressure before the hose blew. Do you have any idea how old the split hose was? I'd be planning on replacing all of the hoses in the near future.

The stalling is a bit puzzling though. Pull the plugs to see if any of them are wet.

Make sure there's enough coolant in there. Airspace in the radiator that should be filled with coolant but isn't just ends up being superheated steam, which can take a lot of pressure if your cap isn't blowing off right.

archie - of course, i wasn't paying attention to the guage......the steam started , count to 3, then it blew....

dave - the cap i'm running is a 'yota oem piece. not sure on the pressure rating.

60 - not sure on the age of the hose - i've had the truck 2 years, but it could be real old. i'll pull the plugs.....and pray....

thanks for the update! Hope there wasn't any collateral damage when it blew and hope you're on the road back soon!

hey hobo my upper rad hose had a spring in it to prevent it from pinching itself make sure that didnt land somewhere in your engine and cause more damage!

I just learned my lesson on changing all the hoses as well, it's very worth it because once one of em blows, they start dropping like flies. You'll be able to do all the lower hoses (and that stupid little hose under the lower rad. hose at the water pump) while the shop gives your radiator a work over. I reccomend doing all the heater and bypass hoses under the hood at the same time. Don't forget to take a good look at the rear heater hoses as well.

1st thing I do when I get a new cruiser.......change out all the hoses.

OEM hoses do not have springs in them.....only aftermarket

UMMMMMMM

did i happen to mention i've got water under my front passenger floor mat, soaking the carpet?

seems to be a leak from the firewall down.....would that be a hose or the heater core?

bets on heater core

hobo,

don't assume your front heater core is bad!

water in either of the front footwells could be coming from a variety of places. if it smells of coolant and has that sort of slippery feel to it, then i'd say your heater core is suspect. however, if it's plain water, you've got some sort of external leak.

when i first got my 60, whenever it rained the driver's carpet would get soaked. took me forever with a garden hose and a flashlight to find the source of the leak.
the fix was much easier than replacing the heater core, which i'm betting is no walk in the park.

i'd slap a top hose on it and pressure test the system to look for leaks.

oh...sorry man. i was trying to think positive and send you some good juju.
