Well I do wish I could meet up but am way too busy.

One place I go for maps is trails.com. Sometimes they have some cool stuff.

The UP is a fine trip. I was hoping to get up there this fall but time eluded me.

I have made it up there with the UPOverland.org group that last three years. I love it up there too.

Meeting minutes(i'm not secretary, thats for sure)

Thanks to those who attended last nights meeting, we had about 8 guys and even a lady. Thanks to South Lyndale Liquors for the tasty brews; to Tony, Chief Scout, for all the leg work on these trip suggestions, already done; everyone for putting in their great experience and valuable input.

To recap, we have 2 trip ideas in the hopper.
-Brainerd to Superior early season, and
-Circumnavigation of Lake Nipigon, (this trip needs minimum req's, by those interested, to be a participant)
-Reconn trips

Things to be done:
--Gather more intel on Lake Nipigon, long week trip
-contact land managing organization in the area for permission and info
-seasonal windows, bugs, weather, etc.
--Shore up details on Brainerd to Superior, weekend trip
-mileage, estimate pace, camping locations, etc.
--Possibly create forum for trip planning. I'm looking into that now.

As far as interest in UP trips, the consensus was to utilize the UP Overland trip or plan a specific trip for that.

Thanks, again guys, I'm excited for this up coming season.

Next meeting planned for Feb 9th same bat time, same bat channel, 7pm at my place.

If I missed something, please post it up.

Thanks for the compliment. We are pushing forward with the Nissua-Bemidji-Ely-Grand Marais trip. Scouting trips will take place as soon as the trails are clear enough to drive. The culmination will be a continuous trip start to finish of all the legs. We determined that we will not host a trip but encourage individuals to be a part of the discovery.
We have created the Midwest Overland Society and aside from the obvious we will be doing our best to work with the DNR and Forestry service to create continuous trails and lead towards a trans-Minnesotan trail system.

Look for a hosted trip next spring.

There is also a possibility of a black hills trip.

The Lake Nipigon trip will be a small group this year as well.

Let me know if you have intel and interest in the scouting trips.

Dates, we are watching the snow melt. If you'd like to be on the frontline of info and be a contributing part, shoot me your email and I'll add you to the list. If you have info on these sections, email me from my website and we'll get you connected. We are looking for engaged individuals this year, next year we will offer an organized trip. This is the year of discovery, the ground floor, next year will be a bit more lackadaisical, since the preliminary work will be done.

Jeremy,

So Nisswa(?)-Bemidji-Ely-Grand Marais.

Any ideas on dates? Also what kind of roads/trails?

7pm Wednesday January 4th 2012 at Expedition Ops in Minneapolis, for a planning meeting.
We'll assess what we want to do and what's feasible. 1 big trip and a
couple small trips as was suggested by another member. Not counting
day trips.

Feel free to invite new folks, we've had about 20 or so people at the
events. This has quite a bit of potential.

Contact me for directions, the shop is alley access only.

Thanks,

Jeremy

Tons accomplished at tonight's meeting!

We have 3 trips on the calendar for this up coming season. 2 small weekend trips and 1 weeklong trip.

June 1-3 Tony will be leading us thru central Minnesota "part 1" from Nisswa thru Walker and finishing around Black Duck
August 11-18 Dan will be leading us from the Badlands thru the Black Hills of South Dakota finishing at Devil's Tower
September 14-16 Rich will lead us on the remainder, picking up where the last trip left off, of our central Minnesota "part 2" to the Arrowhead of Minnesota trip.
Next Meeting:
Feb 13th. Look forward to Monthly meetings, second tuesday of the month (except this next one due to the Valentines day issue) I don't think the misses will appreciate hanging out with us as V-Day date. One topic is Midwest Overland Society logo design, come with ideas. Decals to be made once the design is finalized.

The weekend trips will start Friday night at a camp, allowing some members to get there early but if you can't escape work til later Friday, we'll still be there when you roll in. We will be headed home Sunday. We are also, hopefully, going to be mapping these trails and providing condition reports to some state agencies to assist in an initiative to create a better trail system for all users.

The SoDak trip will be a full week to 9 days, 2 of those being big interstate travel days.

Just to clarify, these trips are not "guided trips" you will be responsible for yourself and your own gear. No one will make your bed and you may be asked to plan/prepare a dinner. Families are welcome, no better time to teach the youth how to responsibly travel and live with nature. Feel free to bring along alcohol on these trips. Tread Lightly principles will be followed as well as laws and regulations of the lands we are traveling thru. These trips will not be planned to break your vehicle or your spirit, but orchestrated to get all of us out there to have a good time and see some country that many others may never get to see or accomplish. We will most likely have a wide range of experience from novice 4wheelers to seasoned rock crawlers to experienced overlanders to Dual Sporters.

If you would like to join any of these trips, throw the dates on your calendar and contact the Trip Leaders to register Contact me and I will put you on our mailing list and in touch with our trip leaders. We are currently in the process of putting together an email group.

The Trip Leaders are responsible for coordination of the trips. They will be managing the development of routes, campsite location, food planning, required vehicle equipment, meeting location, etc. If you would like to be involved with the planning of these trips, let the trip leaders know, they will need your help to square it all away.

As always, feel free to contact me with questions.
