Ok.. With the OME lift behind me.. I want to put BFG 33"950R15\s on my 40.

After checking around at a few tire places I have been told that I must change my wheels(rims) in order to accomodate the bigger tire. My stock rims will not work.

I have been directed towards Rocky Mountain Cruisers for the Rims, but is this my only option?

I tried on one of Nick's 33's and it fit fine except some rubbing due to the wrong rim/ tire tickness. I think a narrow 33 will look killer on my 40 and will give me some extra clearance for next time in the bush.

What do you guys think?

Russ

chris hancock has skinny 33's on what i belive are stock rims. They look great.

So does Dan Rochat.

The general rule of thumb is "no more than 4" difference between rim and tire width".

That being said, I run 35x12.5's on 8" rims. I''ve heard they actually hold the bead better than if I were to run the same tire on a 10" rim.

Sooooo, what's the bottom line? I think a 33x9.5 or 33x10.5 would be fine on a stock rim. And look good too.;)

Or, you could hit this link to usedvictoria.com and see the first set of rims... Toyota 6 bolt 8" white wagon wheels with 3.75 (the correct) backspacing.

Cheers-

you're going to need to hit the gym to so that you can turn those bigger meats, i run 31" tires on mine that are bald and i had a hell of a time turning them when they were aired down. how wide are those tires in english? i dont do metric tire sizes so well....when looking for rims make sure you spec 3.5" of back spacing or less otherwise they will rub on your TRE and also the caliper

and on the width note.....i have those 35x16x15 tires on 8" rims....the tire guy will just really dislike you

That is english... 33inches by 9.5 inches by 15 inches

Tall and skinny can be wheeled quite well, just ask Dan Rochat. Is it tougher? sure, will it give you big beefy arms? Yes... you may even see a vein pop out... Chicks dig em!;)
Seriously, my arms got bigger when I drove my 40 before P/S.

Just called Rocky Mountain Cruisers. They told me that I would need at least an 8inch wide rim in order to fit a 9.5 wide tire. The tire shops I went to told me the same thing. Hmmm..

The rims that Rocky Mountain sells have the correct back spacing.

Can I buy new rims around here somewhere? I supposed I could buy used if the right ones came up for sale... But part of me wants to get new shiny ones... Can I buy new ones around here?

Don't worry about my arms... I'll eat my spinach and get power steering installed ASAP.

 i dun gone ta school long time eh....musta missed that lol. an 8" rim for a 9" wide tire sounds kind of like begging to blow a bead on the trail. im not at all against tall and skinny, they look good on cruisers i like the Q78's and the super swamper SS tires...i think both just come in bias ply though

apperently the SS tires are pretty cheap as well, a buddy of mine runs them on his sammy and they do great.

and yup...i know what wheeling without ps is about...i did it for about 2 of the 3 years iv owned my cruiser, feels like you just got home from the gym after a day of wheelen

That is english... 33inches by 9.5 inches by 15 inches

I swear some of these tire stores have never been wheeling at all. a 9.5" tire on an 8" rim is rediculous! you will blow beads often when aired down. I just ordered 33x10.50 swamper radials and will put them on stock toyota truck rims which are 6-7" wide.

Chet's on the mark here kids... 12.50s on 8" rims if that's the tire you want to run. 10" wide rims if you like blowing your beads all the time...

You *can* call us... we do have lots of experience AND we're local. I don't quite understand why everyone on here wants to support US businesses when we're here to help and have the knowledge you're after.

IF you're going to get new tires and rims, we can get stock Toyota rims in 16" with the correct back-spacing for Land Cruisers for a very reasonable price. The Toyota rims are much better quality than most of the aftermarket.

For economy and strength, you might want to go with a 255/85R16 tire. They are very tough, wheel well, and hold up on back roads extremely well (most are E load rated). The benefit is that they are about 33x10.50, but offer lower rolling resistance than their 15" brethren equaling better fuel economy (which can be quite substantial). The ride will be a little stiffer, since they will have a road pressure of about 50 PSI for an FJ40.

Something to think about....

John,

I'm sorry. I didn't think of you guys when I first thought of getting tires.. I don't know why. I think this all started one day on my way home from work I saw a tire store here in Vic and stopped in and started asking questions. If your shop was here in town I would be stopping in all the time and would probably need a second job to pay for my newly rebuilt cruiser!

If you're telling me I don't need new rims for bigger tires then I guess thats really good news. When I get those tires I can get you guys to upgrade my steeting. I also need a host of other things...as you know!

Russ;

I don't recall what rims you have on your FJ40, but for more conservative sizes you can stick with stock rims. If you're going to get new rims it would be a good idea to consider moving up to 16" rims and a tall/skinny tire like a 255/85R16.

If you can re-use your old rims then you might be ahead of the game financially to go with something like a 33x10.50. These would work well on a 7" rim. A 6" wide rim might be a touch narrow, but you can look this up on tables online through tire websites.

If the rim is too narrow, you can run into problems with the bead seating angle being bad - just is if the rim was too wide.

9.5 on 8" sounds crazy

I've been running 33x12.50 on 8" rims for years.

Call Jason Dumont at Dumont tire in Sooke if you want to hear it from a tire shop.

He wheels and will give you an honest opinion.

what they said.

if the guy won't mount the tire for you, find a different tire guy, he's being way too anal. borderline costco anal, where they won't mount a tire for you if it didn't come stock on the vehicle...( and then apparently won't honour the tires warranty...)

255 85 16's are a nice way to go. I noticed a substantial increase in mileage and power when I swapped from 33 12.5's.

that aside tho, I thought bfg was going to stop making the 33 9.5 a couple years ago?

Rigpig ran 33x9.5 BFG mud tires on his 40 and found them quite unstable on side hill... Maybe he can pipe up here, all I know is he didn't like them. I have 12.5 wide swampers on 7.5 wide rims and have had very good success with this combo.

Listen to John though, he know his stuff. Don't put 12.5's on a 10 wide rim. A guy at a tire shop in Chemanus told me to do this also... I wouldn't worry too much about 10.5 tires on stock rims.

I'm not a BFG fan but thats another story...
