As I now have upgraded to a 62 I won't be over here very much (I hope) as I will be on the better board (the 60/62) most of the time.
BUT
to keep this from being bumped to the CC board, I have one question I bet has never been asked ( and I bet will never be asked again ):

I have the Landtoy80 improved Downey Cable Lock for the rear diff on the 80.
Can I swap axle ass. from the 62 to the 80? The wife doesn't need a rear diff lock!

As for the swap, I assume you mean just swap the carriers? If it is possible you'll probably have to do a mod as listed on Slee's site for adapting a locker to a non lockered rear end. If you mean whole rear axle get ready to have even more fun.... but I really don't know what I'm talking about

That idea doesn't work. The gear ratio is not the same. 4.10 vs 4.11. unless I go with bigger tires on the front of one cruiser and the rear of the other.
I have no idea which way it go???

You're confused they are both the same ratio. 62s and 80s that is. Stock gears are the same people say 4.10 and 4.11 but they are the same people just write the ratios wrong. 60 series have 3.70s.

You cannot drop an 80 series rear locker into the rear of a stock US spec'd 62 series. The 62 does not have a fullfloating rear axle and the 80 rear third with the locker doesn't have a provision for allowing C-clips to be installed to hold the 62 semi floating axles in. So for the 62 you are looking at needing an ARB if you want a selectable locker in the rear. Or you could swap in an non USA fullfloating 62 rear end.

I don't think it will work. The cable locker uses 1 axle with longer splines for the collar to slide on. Your 60 won't have that. Also, I don't think the locker side gears have the groove for the c-clip on the end of the axle.

The gear ratio is not an issue-The FJ62 is usually in RWD anyway and if it's slippery enough to use the locker, 0.24% difference in the gearing will not matter.

I thought so too, but nope. I've held them both in my hands at the same time,

FJ40-62 9 tooth pinion, 37 tooth ring gear = 4.11

FZJ-80 10 tooth pinion, 41 tooth ring gear = 4.10

I posted the reply about the locker the same time as Eric-sorry about the duplicate info.

I was thinking of doing a full axle assembly (hub to hub) swap but that would be alot of welding to make the 62 axle assembly work on the 80.

My other option was to buy a used 80 axle assembly with locker and either swap the diffs or put the used axle ass. on the 80 and install the cable locked axle ass. on the 62.

But with the gearing off I would have driveline windup if I drove on pavment I had this happen on a chevy pu, It had the same size tires all around but the front tires were a different brand than the rear, so the diameter were not the same. I almost got killed when driving to work on a snow cover road. THe driveline would wind up and releace and throw the vehicle either to the left of the right. I had it throw the vehicle to the left just as a semi was comming at me in the oncomming lane.

If I knew what size tire I would need to make up the difference in the gearing, I would be ok.

Interesting! What about FJ80s? I had mine apart to put the ARB in but I never counted the teeth. Never thought anything about it. People commonly call 40 and 62 diffs 4.10s and on 60s the 3.73/3.70 mistake happens all the time. I guess you learn something new everyday. What do the LC folks do who swap in rear elocked 80 diffs into the front of their 40,55,62? Do they regear or just deal with it?

If you put a 80 axle in the rear you would also have to either space out the wheels in the front or install a 80 axle in the front to get both axles the same width. Other wise you would have a much wider track in the back. later robbie

With a difference of 1/4 of 1%, there is nothing to deal with. I believe many domestics come that way from the factory. I think older F150 4wheel drives were 3.54 in the rear and 3.59 in front. Those numbers are close but not exact. The rule of thumb I have heard is that less than 1% does not matter as you induce greater differences with routine steering of the front wheels.

I think FJ80s and FZJ80s both have 4.10 gearing, ie 10x41 teeth, but I reccomend you disassemble yours to check and be sure. J/K

The other factor is the 62 axles are not wide enough for the 80 series!

Like Eric mentions - install an ARB, Detroit, Lock-right, etc., in the 62! You are going to faint when you price the lift for the 62 over the prices you were used to with the 80!

Have you swapped out the VSV in the 62 yet?
