Hey folks wondering if any one has ever done a rear swap from drum to discs. Is this a good idea or a bad one? I know the fronts do most of the braking. So would there be anything gained from swapping the rear?

The best option would be to swap in a FF rear axle out of an FZJ. That would give you discs, FF and and elocker if you chose to buy an elocker housing.

What is FF and where can I find one?

FF = Full Floating. The 93-97 FZJ80s have Full Floating axles while the 91-92's had semi-floating.

You can find the axles in junk yards . . .

Not totally true. Only trucks with disc brakes have FF rear. Some FZJ's did come with the semi floater.

Not totally true either.

ALL 95-97 80's have the FF w/ discs. SOME have the elocker.

93-94 MOST have FF w/discs. SOME have the elocker. SOME are the same drum brake setup you have right now.

If the truck has ABS, it has a rear FF w/ disc.

My statement WAS totally true. Only trucks with disc brakes have the Full floater. What is not true about that? Some FZJ's have drums. What is not true about that? My post was just lacking extranious detail.

Technically, yes it is correct. My bad.

However, I though the fact that it lacked the distinction (a fairly significant one) between 93-94 and 95-97 made it insufficient.

It was also the fact that I was on page 3 of a 10 pg paper due today and felt like being an ass. :D

Find one in the junkyard? hmm where I live I've never found an FJ80 in the junk. So are you talking about finding them from other Toy pickups?

TAP Recycling in Rancho Cordova usually has a few 80s in their yard.

Some have had bad experiences with them, but I've never had a problem. Their prices start high (usually at 1/2 price for the same part new), but I've had no problem negotiating with them.

I ALWAYS deal with them face-to-face, so maybe that's why I've had better luck than others (most people having problems have dealt with them over the phone).

If you go there, see if a guy named Jesse is still working at the desk -- I've worked with him a couple times and he seems pretty cool.

I picked up a rear driveshaft from them for an FZJ80 -- their price started at $225, but I ended up paying around $60 in the end. You just have to be patient and have a decent negotiating skills.
