I know someone else in the club has a project they need help with or they just think would make a good Tech Day. I have been been busy wheeling this year and not fixing my truck, so I have not been as focused on Tech Days as I should be. I am going to set a date very soon for my Saginaw power steering swap for those interested in that. When I do, I will post up a separate thread. Cahill may have an engine swap in the future.

Does anyone in the club have any projects they would like help with that would make a good Tech Day? Do you have expertise in an area and would be willing to host a Tech Day?

Hey John,
I think a regular maintenance item like a knuckle rebuild or a tune-up / valve adjustment....that could be done to multiple trucks at the same time at the same place, would be very helpful.

Thanks for asking.

Doug

John, I agree with Doug on the tune-up/valve adjustment tech day. Knuckle rebuild is good too, though that may be a bit much for a single day.

I think a simple body work tech day would be helpful. If you're wheeling, it's good to know the technique for dinging out dents and using body filler.

EDIT: I'll also toss in TREs and Center arm rebuild.

John,

When I get back to DC and settled in, I'll do a welding tech day and maybe "super tune" tech day as well ( how to fine tune carburetor and timing adjustments).

Would have to be over the winter but I have a 754 sq ft garage at my new place and a 2nd detached garage! Whoo Hooo! :D

I am going to be busy working on my house and my friend's HJ45, but I am always up for a Saturday morning of wrenching to clear my head and get some garage time.

Hey Stum, so you are moving back! Sounds like you will have my dream garages. Let me know when you want to do the welding tech day, I can help out.

I am eventually looking to do solid axle swap on mini but before, will need to do a front axle rebuild.

Also, Ed wanted to do another electrical tech day. the first one was a hit and I learned a bunch of things.

Yea, I'm psyched to be moving home.

That sweet tig machine you have would be worth doing a tech day to just get a chance to play with. Have you tried the pulser modes on AL yet? Sweet stuff. I played with that machine for hours at the Miller Roadshow and I've never used a finer welder.

I have not done a whole lot of alum yet. have not had the chance. but anytime you want to come over to mess with it, no problem. I just got a new bottle of Argon.

I love that machine. It is such a pleasure to use. I have used the stick feature a whole bunch too.

I want to do a few projects for the mini with alum. but i need to buy more diamond plate first. I also need to finish the fenders i started that are on there now (i made those out of T6160).

Thanks for the offer! Once you get settled in let us know when you want to do it. I really like the idea of a super tune up day.

It seems like there is a lot of interest in knuckle rebuilds at this time so I think we should definitely do that soon. The electrical tech day was a hit so if Ed is willing to do that again that would be great.

I am going to look at the calendar and setup a day for my Saginaw swap. Who else besides Sebastien wants to do a knuckle rebuild at the tech day? Meaning you will bring your truck or axle to a tech day and work on it, not just attend, help, watch, etc?

My knuckles have been freshly rebuilt, but I'd be more than happy to help someone with the dirty work. And you will get dirty! I remember a fair amount since I helped Ryan do mine last year.

I might be in for a knuckle tech day. My truck definitely needs it. It needed a rebuild two years ago.

I just need to get the rebuild kit and anything else I'd need.

Yep, I'd be in for a knuckle rebuild day. My cruiser needed it probably 10 years ago.

Well it looks like we have our trucks to work on. Please order up your knuckle rebuild kits from your vendor of choice now so we will be ready once we set a date.
That means you, Doug, Felix, and Sebastien. Be aware that most kits do NOT come with wheel bearings so if you want to replace those while you are in there (which I would) be sure to order them also.

Please check out some of these links on a front end rebuild so you know what to expect. This is a MESSY job. You will all need to ensure you have a oil drain pan or some other device to catch the gear oil and grease and plenty of shop towels and gloves.

Knuckle Rebuild

I can provide brass drifts, snap ring pliers, fish scales, hub sockets, torque wrenches, etc that are needed for this job.

I would only add get lots of brake cleaner to clean everything. You'll need lots of grease too.

John, do you have a bearing packer?

Yeah, I forgot to add the part about making sure they have 3 or 4 tubs of moly grease and one or two of wheel bearing grease. These are two different types of grease. I can post up pictures of what the cans look like but the key is to make sure you get moly grease for the knuckles. The wheel bearing grease is easy to find.

I have two bearing packers but still often use my hands when I can't locate them.

I think of it as the black stuff goes in the knuckles and the red stuff goes in the bearings. :princess:

Any advice on those "vendors of choice"?

So, kit, wheel bearings, gloves, pan, grease (two kinds), towels....

I went with CDan for the complete package (OEM is best IMHO), but Cruiser Outfitters is great too. I think I read that you don't get shims unless you go with OEM, but not sure. (you normally reuse your existing shims anyway)

EDIT: Kurt's kits have shims.

Most kits have OEM bearings (Koyo) and other items. You can get the kits from most toyota vendors like marlincrawler.com etc...

If you have a drum front axle, it might be a little more difficult to locate.

The club also has a parts washer, so we can use that to clean out essential parts.

Where did you want to host it John?

Yes, I had to get my inner bearing from SOR. CDan had everything else. I'm not sure who else has the front drums (besides Doug).

Like everything else, Marlin Crawler only carries 79 and up, but it may be worthwhile to get their new heavy-duty front axle oil seal, which I think is universal.
