I just got back from a trip and decided to take the bride out to dinner. We took her 4runner and as we were leaving I notice a new noise. It sounds like an electric drill that speeds up with acceleration. It doesn't seem to affect the power of the engine or anything else. Still makes noise with a/c off and radio off.

Thoughts?

It sounds like it is coming from the front of the engine. I think it is louder on the passenger side, but that could be b/c of the fan.

Belt tensioner pulley bearing maybe.

Is there a way to check that without sticking a hose to it and listening?

If it is a belt tensioner pulley bearing, how easy is it to replace?

How many miles on the beast? 3.4L?
Timing belt and water pump due?

I would try reaching in with the engine off (of course:))
and try wiggling the the various components on the front of the engine (pulleys, fan, etc.) and look for looseness.

yes

Don't really know. I thought the TB was supposed to be replaced at 100k.

Thanks. I have played around in the engine compartment with the engine off and I have not felt or noticed anything loose. The sound is coming from the front of the engine, for sure, and it must be one of the pulleys or the fan.

How easy is it to replace some of those componets on the front of the engine?
