Came by today and his 80 with 90k on it has been running like crapola . No guts and would keep blowing the hose off the bottem of the EGR valve . When he got the truck about a year ago it had a full blowen toyota tuneup and 2 new cats also from toyota and they still had the part # labels on them. It ran great for the 1st 8 months then it turned into a dog.
We replaced the EGR and modulator about a month ago but got worse over the last month
and when he got home the last time he drove it the Ex manafold was glowing red
He brought it down and we started looking for a vacuum leak . (glow = too lean ) None found so next thing was
pull the 2nd cat off and see how it runs . since the only thing that would cause the EGR hose to blow off was a clogged exhaust system.
Thinking that since new cats were put on there maybe the old cat guts stuck in the system like the muffler or resonator
Sure enough the 2nd cat was so clogged that you couldnt see through it .
The stuff looked like metal chips stuck in the honeycomb
so out came the rod and hammer . The cat looked fine no melt down or any other problem other then it having all this stuff stuck in it . Looked like no other I have seen that died from overfueling or crushed / broken guts
Put it back together and its like a new truck .
Hes going to drive it some and see if it sets a CEL since its only running the front cat and it may not be able to heat the rear O2 up enough. Also to see if the front one is the one comming apart but it looked fine .
Time will tell if this will do it .
