Cory - Tips on selling it better (helped me with my unemployment in 08')::hillbilly:

 Thanks for the tips! I'm remember that for next time -- though hopefully, there won't be a "next time"

In my defense, I didn't make the sign. I borrowed it from my friend Brian.

BTW, the "set" for my photo is the parking lot for Guanaquito, home of Phoenix's tastiest pupusas. :grinpimp:

I knew I should have copyrighted this....;-)

I too am unemployed since new years eve...what a great way to start the year! GOod luck with your business venture, I'm in the process of starting my own handyman business:D

I hold to the "lemonade" view. If you have lived below your means recently, you are in a position to hold out for a bit. Things always pick up. Those who have the balls to start a biz during a downturn sweeten the lemons a lot in the long run. I respect those guys a lot.
Matters are rough right now, no matter what you do. But it will get better. It always does.
I started up 3 years ago, and I don't know if I would do it now. But I am actually busier than I was a year ago. Things are going pretty well.
I just got back from a week at Sea World and Dizzyland. It can't be all bad! Business is actually pretty good.
Part of it is that two years ago, I focused on the small jobs. I didn't go after the big, high-paying work. Now the small work is the only thing that sells. People can still afford that. So I keep busy. I go to work every day, while a lot of guys sit at home. I do what I enjoy most, and a bit of money follows. It's only daily work for daily pay, but it is steady work, doing what I love to do. Life is good right now.
It helps that I sold my nice hut in the city 3 years ago, and bought a smaller one in a smaller town. But the time for doing that may have passed.
It also helps that I never give in to any form of pessimism. There is always something to do. Never give up!
There is nothing wrong with looking for employment in a tough time. Many people still find jobs.
But while you are looking, there is no reason not to chase your dream! You have the time now. If you have a good idea, you may find it more profitable than a job when things pick up. More power to you! Go for it!!

Thanks Brian.....

You are welcome! I mean it. Every word.
Business really is better every year than the last, even in a tough economy. I turn down work at least twice a week. I have never been as busy as I am right now. Honesty pays off.
Mostly, if you are competent and you lack greed, you will do well. The economy is irrelevant. Do real quality work. Price your services at a level that people can afford, and they will beat a path to your door.
I was counting on a break from work this winter so that I could work on my own home. It never happened. I already had the cash, but we had some family business at Disneyland. That used up some cash. So we will have to restart.

Last winter, I layed some cobblestone pavers to make a driveway. I did it from under 6" of snow. I had 6" of snow laying over the pavers.I also set up a drip irrigation system over 1/2 acre of land. These things are not my usual types of work.
I did it because I was out of work.If I have a clue how to do it. I will go!!!!!!!

Brian, what you are saying is that it really comes down to attitude and desire. Sometimes the only blockade to doing something are the ones we put on ourselves.

Also the responsibility of a family certainly will raise your game - thats for sure. Sounds like your happy doing what you want to do

...whats this....."family business in Dizzyland?!"

Family biz in disneyland is just this; My daughter needed to revisit Mickey's house!
She is just young enough to still believe, and it is special to her. Dinner with Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty and the mermaid impresses her still.
A portrait with Mickey and a hug from Minnie make all the difference to her. Lessa will never again be at that magical age. Screw the US economy! My kid is more important than any of that!
We also saw Sea world, Shamu, the dolfins, the Wild Animal Park, and etc. Went to the beaches from La Holla up to LA. It was a wonderful spring break.
I spend much of my business life telling my clients that if they can't afford it, they shouldn't do it. But that if they can, it is bargain time! Prices are low, and if you have the ability, now is the time.
I practice what I preach. The spring break vacation was at a low rate, and we went. It was great!! It would have cost a lot more next year.
Around Prescott Valley, people are putting up buildings. They won't be rented for a year or two, but they are building them anyway. Material and labor are low right now, and the market will pick up later. So empty spaces are being built.
A soft economy is an opportunity for the strong, and an excuse for the weak. Who are you?!!

Nice, and you are so right, I got my camper at Christmas time for about half of what it woulda cost a year ago..... there are deals to be had for sure. ON EVERYTHING

I not only subscribe to this attitude, I live it in business. The ups and downs of the economy do not affect the ability to succeed, They only affect the method of reaching success. When the economy is high, you make money and save some. When the economy is low, you build a client base for the future. That base will pay when things pick up. It works every time.
When the economy was flying high, I built room additions. Now that things are slower, I do small renovations. It is all the same. I make a living either way. I don't care. It makes no difference to me.
Mostly, I would rather always do small work. Doing a large construction job may be stable for a while, but it seems too much like a real job. I go to work in the same place for two or three weeks. I start thinking about carpooling. This is just too normal for me! I can't handle it. I'm way too independent. I would rather do my thing and move on every two or three days.
I do the same things in any case. When I finish a remodel, no matter how small, I buy the lady a gift. Just a little glass vase with a glass flower in it in her favorite colors. It touches her heart, and makes her mine forever!
Last year, Steve and I had three months mostly off over winter. I rebuilt all 60 feet of my deck, wired in new patio lights, piped gas to the new grill and all that. This year we have been so busy that I hardly have time to unclog a drain in my house. Is this a recession? I almost fear the day when the economy picks up! I may need to be two of me.
If there are two words in english that I truly hate, they are "employee" and "boss". As the economy picks up, I may have to come to terms with those words. Things are looking well, and I simply can't be everywhere all the time. I'll do my best.
