The thread about going slower in an FJ62 made me think of what the perfect wheeling setup for a 60 series would be. I guess the engine you choose or want would affect the final ratios, but my choice would be: H55F + Marlin Box with 4.70 gears + FJ60 split case (2.276 gears) + 4.88 diffs with ARB's + rear full floater axle, running the new generation Longfield/inners and pushing radial 37" tires on non-beadlocked steel wheels. Here's some details:

- H55F because I drive my wagon on long highway trips, gotta have at least some overdrive capabilities
- Marlin box (when and if it becomes available) because it's a proven design, allows a wide spread of gear rations, shortens the rear driveshaft, and because a third shifter is always a conversation piece
-FJ60 split case because it's the lowest available ratio for the H55F, and because it's a pretty strong case
- 4.88's because they're a fine balance between strength/ratio/overdrive.
- Rear full floater because a locker and 37" tires are going to put a lot of strain on a semi-floater
-37" tires because they fit nicely in the wheel wells of a SOA 60 series, they give you good clearance for the underbody, and because they're the biggest radial tires you can buy. Radials because I drive on the highway and can't justify replacing tires too often. Steel rims for the strength and trail fix possibilities, no beadlocks because my ideal FJ60 is a long range cruiser.

I know there's a million different opinions out there, please share, I'd like to compare them.

nice set up.. im heading down that path just got to find someone to buy the 35s to get a set of 37s but the 4.11s are on the way :)

Sounds like the set-up I'd like for my SOA 45 w/60 drive-train. I am currently running stock 1984 FJ60 gears, and 9.5x34 LTB's (because they were cheap) I think I want some radials though and I have plenty of room for bigger tires. I just don't want wider tires as I like the tall and skinny look.

My 35s look tiny under my SOA FJ-60 with trimmed rear. WWWwwwaannting 37s bad!!!

i think i want a set of MTR's mmmm

I like it. All I'm missing is the Marlin Toy box. Actually, I bought axles with 5.29's and ARB's already in them. I need to change to 4.11's because my diesel doesnt want to spin that high. I think I'll sell the 5.29's/ARB's and get some factory 4.11's with cables.

1HD-FT + H55F + Toybox (2.29 is fine) + D300(stock ratio)/Atlas(3:1). I like the idea of being able to do a "front dig" or being able use cutting brakes to help turn the big beast in tight situations. Already have FF and cable lockers. :D Everything else mentioned sounds good.

yo Al, it's Josh here, Jeremy's brother. You need to sell him the 35's. He needs sone meats on that rig!

Same here, but my 4.11's won't move those 37's, I'm waiting to get 4.88s before I upgrade. Got a set of 35's that have lasted a long time, but they're getting a bit dry rotted. Maybe by the end of the summer....

1HD-FT is a long-time dream, came very close once but family issues came up. It's very tough to justify the expense, and I've always been concerned with the parts availability.

37's + 4.11" = Smoking clutch.

Hell I have trouble with 35's and 4.11's on the rocks. Started smoking it really bad in the black hills last week.

37's + 4.11's + Intercooled Turbo Charged 1HZ (300ft pounds of torque) = awesome rig and 20+mpg.

HA!

I actually managed to eek out like 16+ mpg on the way back from the BHCC  . I was just about floored. I only got like 13 on the way out because the wind driving through SD was vicious.

Forgot about tires. :) TSL/SX, Boggers, or Iroks in the 37-40" range and 4.88 or even 5.29 gears.

Heck, I'll take some of those 3/4 gear bolt-on/weld-on portal boxes too. :D

Man.
Just give me a LHD, normal roof, 24V HJ-61 w/H55-F, HF2A, cable lockers F/R, electric winch
and round headlights. I'll put custom bumpers and sliders, spare carrier, roofrack/tent and 35"
Michelin or BFG radial mud tires on it. And the Supra seats.
That'd be my ultimate 60-series.

I don't know about ultimate, but this is how I decided to build my rig...I think it is a good start.

12H-T with pi and intercooler waiting to go in.
auto tranny with extreme valvebody on full synthetic with cooler
FF rear
cable lockers.
SOA on new stock springs
awaiting the arrival of 5.29 gears
4 wheel disk brakes with 4 runner calipers
smirfields
11.00R16 Michelin XLs on 16x7 rims with 3.5BS
new poly body mounts and 2" body lift awaiting install
IFS hub up front
1.5" spacer in the rear

It's big and heavy

I hope the 5.29s hold up, it is my only real concern. I would also like a set of cromo inners but as they are custom because of the lockers, I am going to wait to blow them up....A toybox or lower t-case gears would be nice. I guess I'll see how the auto does.

205-75-R15s, rust on the rear rocker panel, original shocks/belts/plug wires from the factory, saggy rear springs, "Free Tibet" sticker on the back, torn drivers seat, leaky rear main and hubs that were either rarely locked in or locked in and left that way for a year or two during it's life.

I'm not sure if that's the ultimate set-up, but it sure seems to be a popular one! :D

That sounds exactly like the FJ60 I bought for parts for my 45. In fact I think HZJ60 Guy has the tub. Tom, is that you? How about a bigger picture of it.

stay safe,
-Al

oh the the rear is getting an aussie locker with 4.88s who ever said somthin about the locker

I'll take a rust free silver 62 w/grey interior with a 4.7L Tundra motor and auto tranny. Slap some cable locker axles, SOA, and some 35" BFG M/T's on aluminum Outlaw II wheels with a ARB front bumper w/ Ramsey 12000 winch and a custom wrap-around rear bumper set up to hold air and the spare/hi-lift. Add some nice custom sliders for the sides, then custom grey adjustable seats with matching fabric on the rear seat, and a conn-ferr roof rack to hold all the camping equipment. Yep, I think that'll just about do it.
