Hi all,

I seem to have developed a new and expensive sounding problem.

My transmission has started squealing - a sound that is somewhere between a rattle/squeak/squeal - only when in drive. Reverse does not seem to have an effect.

Additionally, it seems to start doing it when I come to a stop. The sound comes and goes, but it is more prominent when cold. I can't say that is isn't a bearing noise, but my gut tells me that it is something different.

The truck has 136,000 miles on it and has been pretty well maintained by myself since I purchased it at 90k miles. In this time, I have changed the transmission fluids twice (drain pan, fill, drive a few miles, repeat 3x).

My first thought is the torque converter, but I really do not know much about automagic transmissions. Anyone have any similar experiences?

I should add that the truck has been making what sounds like a "pinging" when I first hit the gas for quite a while now. I am relatively sure that the sound is from the transmission and not the engine. Perhaps this is related?

Thanks!
CAZ

pinging...

dude, they all ping for the most part, especially with 87 octane... so it's an engine thing, not a tranny thing... the squealling thing, could be a wheel bearing believe it or not... they some time sound that way.... or a u-joint (that piece that joins the drive shaft @ each end, etc)... grease'em up using a grease gun & go from there... unless the thing is shifting bad, then that's another issue... you can also take off the shaft & grease that way (haven't done mine, but others on here have, so they can tell ya how better than I can)...

They do not all Ping Texus. If yours does then you may have a injector issue or the computer is not working right for some reason. You may need some service work. later robbie

Whoa. Pinging is VERY BAD for the rings. If mine was pinging I would get it fixed ASAP...
