I have a '73 FJ40 and I am replacing the long overdue u joints. I have read the tech section in the FAQ and searched as well. The FAQ says I need to remove the c clips, but I can't find any c clips. A buddy of mine tried to help me do it and we put it in a vice with 2 different size sockets. I cranked it down way tighter than i thought had to and nothing. Penetrating oil, heat, bumping it with a hammer.
Still nothing. My friend has done this a bunch of times on his bronco with out fail. I'm thinking there has to be something I'm missing.
The u joints are very corroded, maybe they are rusted stuck? They don't look like they would be.
Any ideas?

Clean away the grease and dirt so you can see them. This should help, see step C.

Are those the snap rings on the outside? I have removed those(I forgot to mention that sorry)

No, they are inside like in the picture but there are none on the outside so you either removed them or you didn't. If they are removed you should be able to remove the ujoint.

I don't think that is a toyota joint you are removeing.
Look at these pics.

Here are some pictures of my U joint. My Hayes manual says there are snap rings on the outside, and says nothing about c clips. :meh:

I have pulled of the snap rings and pulled of the rubber seals looking for c clips (as you can see in the pics) but found none. I might end up putting it in a press a friend has and pushing them out if I can't get them another way.

Here are some pics of the shaft, joint and manual...

Jebus, If you are having that hard a time moving them, cut them in half with a torch and beat the bits out....

Mine look like john_smith's & vicm's. C clips on the inside. Yours look like the other style with the clips on the outside. No kidding though: if you're having to put that much pressure on them, cut them out & remove the pieces before you end up distorting the driveshaft & flange lobes. That's a lot more $!

I think your moving in the wrong direction.
Remove the snap rings ,fill the joint with grease, and move one cup toward where the snap ring was, but not by hammering on the opposite cup. Secure the part of the joint that has the bolt holes into the vise with the cup you want to remove at the bottem and mildly hammer the on the other part to push it out.
