The original steel 16" rims for my BJ42 '83 are running a very small 205R16LT Tubeless Olympic Overlander - work out to 28" ORD. This had the effect of gearing me down so far that it was horrible to drive onroad. I am testing with some AT 31" and the gearing is MUCH better. I suspect I can go up to about 32" without sacrificing too much power for general duties.

Problem is that my current 31"s are on 15" rims and I don't know what constraints my 16" rims (which have the original hub covers etc) place on my selection of tyres.

I seem to find that I need to look at narrower tyres for some reason and wonder then how I get to a 32" (31 would be fine) I don't mind a bit narrower for handling but I want a good allrounder.

In the past on my heap I had BFG ATs and Goodyear Wrangler MTRs - I also heard very good things about the Cooper ST.

How can I get a tyre of this kind for my 16" rims.

The RIMS are marked:

6JX16 4.0 83/6 - I don't know what these numbers signify except the 16././.

any/alll help appreicated. ps I am reading through the numerous faqs and searching as well as asking my own spin on the question that many have faced.

PS i have no lift.

I'm not sure exactly what those numbers on those rims mean, but I'm running an LT255x85x16 for my winter tires and they are about 33 inches tall and skinny. They look to be slightly narrower than a set of 33x9.50x15 swampers I saw in town. The actualy tread "lug" width is just over 7 inches. They are on 16x7 wheels. Hope that helps. I have four inch longer shackles which gives me about two inches of lift and they clear nicely. The fronts have lots of room and the rears are skinny enough to tuck up inside without hitting.

7.50R16s or 235/85R16s are widely available anywhere and should fit that wheel just fine. Plus damn near any tire ever made is available in the later size, including the BFG and goodyear you mentioned, and you should be able to run the on a 40/42 with good springs (I did on my 40 with no rubbing anywhere, and still had room for chains).

I run 7x16's... Depends on how much your stock suspension has sagged. On my 64 fj40 they fit but rub when flexed. Again this is on a 43 year old suspension so close to stock should be ok with a ~31x7

Great, thanks guys. I think my suspension is ok. The 31's I have on now actually measure only about 29-30 from the ground to the top of the tread.

I will have to compare the suspension height with someone elses.
