In my 94 LC I have the TVSS alarm, which gives you the option of either having the horn honk when you arm and disarm along with flashing the lights or just flashing the lights. On my parents 99 4runner ( I think its the RS3000) alarm it has a less annoying/loud chirp instead of honking the horn for arm and disarm verification. I was wondering if anyone has changed the wiring for the TVSS and added this (Piezo?) chirp module and disconnected the horn.

I like having the lights flash, but in the bright sunlight I can't tell all the time if it armed or not. Also, I can hear the door locks, but I still have to be fairly close to the truck to hear that.

So are there any ideas where to get that chirp alarm horn and how to wire it into the factory wiring?
Thanks, Gary

Find the wires that run from the alarm to the horn relay and just plug them in a 12v piezo. You can order the one supplied to the rs3000 from CDan. But check to be sure it's a 12v one, I think it is. Or search on line, I'm sure someone selld them out there.

If I did that though, would it only sound that little piezo horn if the alarm did go off for someone breaking in? Or is it seperate wires for the actual alarm sounding, compared to just the audible verification of arming/disarming the system?

the chirper on my rs3000 died and i replaced it with a radio shack chirper. they were so cheap, i bought two in different frequencies. not sure which one i ended up using but it's real close to the original but not as loud. which i think is good. one of my pet peaves is when all my neighbors arm or dis-arm with the horn honk. gawd.. how rude at 3:00 am.( they are rude bastards all around but that's a whole other post in chat) with my new chirper pointed up at the under hood mat, it's just loud enough for me to hear.
not sure about how to make the horn sound when it's triggered though. do you have a wiring diagram or a "pin out" for the connectors?

How about using the trigger that flashes the lights?

ahh good idea, I just don't have the wiring diagram for the alarm. And I don't have a FSM yet. That should just be an easy wire-up in parallel, assuming when I use my flashers or anything, the chirper doesn't go off :)

I'm resurrecting an old thread there that fits my question. gbell, did you ever get this figured out??

I've always had a problem with how loud and pronounced the honking is when I arm/disarm the truck. The 'chirp' is a full volume horn honk for a half second, which seems excessive to me. I want it to make some kind of sound, but not so loud it wakes up the neighorhood.

If re-wire in a piezo to the alarm, I assume that it will disable the horn honking on the alarm, yes/no?? How would I wire in a piezo that runs off the light flash? I'm at about a 1/2  guy here, so I need some help.

Any easy solutions here to get what I'm looking for??

Thanks,

Marsh

Marsh,
There is an install manual and a wiring diagram for the RS3000 alarm on my web site. Your 93 probably has the TVSS alarm but maybe it is close enough that you can figure it out. FWIW, just adding a piezo won't disable the horn; you will have to find where the circuit is wired to the horn.

Thanks Beowulf...your site's been helpful before, I guess I'll have to dig into the wiring diagrams...argh!

Wish me luck, I'll post some pics after this weekend of what I end up digging into....

I would add that the piezo on my RS3000 has never worked. The first week or so it bugged me so I started tracking down the manuals so I could eventually fix this minor flaw. I have gotten so used to not having the piezo that I don't want it. My hearing is well below average and I can easily hear the doors locking and unlocking from any distance that I can arm/disarm the alarm. Plus you can see the lights blink if you are looking.

If it were me, I would try to find where the alarm is wired to the horn and unhook it. (tape up the wires... no shorts wanted.) Try it that way for a while and see if you like it. If not, go buy a 12v piezo.

That's because you just about have to be touching the vehicle to unlock it! ;)

Touche.

But when I put it under my chin and climb the tree in the parking lot I can open them from 25' or more. :D

Mars,

Sorry I can't be of any help. I never dove into the wiring diagram of the alarm enough. But as Bob_Garret mentioned, when I do get time to look into it more I'll probably look for the trigger from the park lights and see if its affected by the flashers.
Like others have said.. my range is limited so I just listen for the clunk of the locks from 5ft away lol. And yes.. the chin thing does work :)
