And also some cars have a bi-xenon assembly. There is only one pair of lamps but the low/high beam switching is achieved by means of motors/solenoids which move a metal plate. In low beam, the plate covers part of the reflector or bulb. When in high beam the solenoid retracts the metal 'curtain' and exposes more reflector or bulb.

There are also setups where a solenoid moves the bulb itself back and forth, changing the focal charactersitics of the lamp.

But the most common setup are separate highs and lows. Simple and foolproof.

has anyone else tried this in their 80?

I am reading up on HIDplanet.com and I may try this next.....

Has anyone found projectors that fit the ebay headlight housing?

I'm curious,

Would it be possible to change the halogen lens of the stock projector to a HID lens? Would this even work?

This way you don't have too cut or mod the existing headlight. It's just an idea I had.

Thanks

Juan

Its not just the lense that affects the focal characteristics of the light. The HID bulb emits light in a different physical location than a halogen bulb, thus, the HID bulb wont be in the optimal location for the reflector to focus light on the projector lense and poor results will be observed.

And back to everyone elses question... is there a unit that fits that ebay light without modification?

And one more thing. I am using the stock harness. HIDs draw an enormous amount of power at startup (the first 10-20 seconds) so everyone says that running a stock halogen harness is bad. It can melt, switches can melt etc... But I've done some thinking (strange huh?) and realized that the headlights have a separate relay so the switch is not in danger. The cables are also quite thick. I took the risk and so far nothing is melting.
I didn't want another harness as I like simplicity and not a bunch of cables under the hood.

I saw a couple of asian kits which only use the OEM harness as signal sources to drive enclosed relays, they have heavy duty ground and positive to battery wires to power the ballast as should be.

HID

I did the same thing only I used the "capsule bulbs" in the exact same headlight mounts only thing is you dont get quiet as good results. But i would say 85% as good, defetnetly 10 times better then stock and that might me worth it considering the amount of work it took to get the toyota HIDs in. They way i did it took me only about a hr got both the HID kit and head lights from ebay 250(HL) and 200 (hid). They do have a sticker on the HL that say that the lense in the projetor might melt if use with HID bulbs but i have had them for a year and no problems so far. The head lamps are H3 bulbs do if you edcide to put HIDs in u have to get a H3 HID kit for both high and low beams.

I would only replace the low beam and let the high beam with a higher wattage halogen bulb because of it´s instant on, when doing the change over to high beam.

Just an update...

It's been over 14 months since I did my retrofit. I have been using it all the time (the law here requires to have lights on all the time). No problems at all, and I have connected the headlights to the stock headlight harness !!!

HID lights draw many amps when turned on and after a few seconds they stabilize. In many cars the stock harness melts after some time due to the high amperage needed on startup. I have absolutely no signs of wear or melting on the cables, connectors or relay.

So after a year of use I can say that the stock harness is absolutely enough and safe to use

I must admit that I don't understand your question. Can you rephrase it?

He probably means whrere you got yours and what are they (like)???

If that's the case, you can usually pick them up on e-bay, right?

Anyway, HTH's!

Congraluate on such awesome retrofit. I have bought the same halo light and waitin for other parts to start retrofit. I have one question in mind for the guru..Is it possible to change the lense on the original projector to 3 inches clear lenses found on Ebay? Would this idea be feasible? It might not be as good as the genuine lenses, but it would save tonnes of work...just a though...

visit HID planet .. They are the experts on retrofits.... i just finished mine last week :) They can answer the lens swap question

A slight update...

If you ever thought that my headlight mod has ended here, then you were wrong. Recently I had a brilliant idea and today I bought some necessary parts. So stay tuned because revolution is coming. I will get down to it next week.

can you take some pictures of the lights installed, but without the lights on?
