i am thinking of turning up the fuel on my 12ht to get that extra power. what has been your experience with doing this? what are the positive and the negatives. some say just do it! any word of caution? thanks:steer:

keep it reasonable and you wont be having any problems, and remember to watch temps...

Did you just get your 12H-T rebuilt? If so -dont bother as for now put on 10,000 miles first

I agree with the other posters, a boost gauge and an EGT gauge are essential. And be sure to install the pyrometer probe pre-turbo.

I'm not familiar with the 12ht, but there are some adjustments that can be made on the 1HD-T boost compensator that can further fine tune your power levels. Specifically, you can adjust how much fuel is injected during off-boost conditions. Worth checking in to.

Search is your friend.

But why?
Are you not satisfied with the power output of the 12HT at factory settings.
I personally would not mess around with it since replacement engine parts are not that plentiful nor easy to source.

Increasing fuel and boost levels from std values wont have any (minimal at worst) effect on engine longevity as long as egt's and exhaust pressure are kept in control... It's the heat that kills engines usually...

no, because the diesel mechanic that was suppose to help me put it together after the machine shop said do not over haul after he heard the engine, 3 other diesel mechanic also told me the same after listening to engine. so i have given up at least temporarily on the idea of over hauling it, i can not complain it is saving me money.

i have both boost and a pyro meter.

I agree, the 12HT is already pretty good.

Just drive around in a 2H for a day, and when you get back in your 12HT, you'll realise you had all the power you needed already. ;)

i did, and am smiling all the time now...big difference in power. EGTs do not go over 1220ish and boost maxes at 1 bar. 2 1/2" exhaust also.

:steer:

it's good having more power offroad here.

my rig is heavy 7000 pounds. i agree if it was not this heavy i probably do not need it. my engine was a 2H then i switch to the 12HT, no regrets what so ever it is a monster of an engine and love the simplicity.

how much did you open it up? how many turns? did you experience more smoke? i know i have to experiment with it.

i did it

turn the fuel one full turn, drove it almost a whole day today in the city and freeway. my experience so far is lower egt and seem to boost faster. my biggest fear was increase smoke, my experience so far is actually less smoke. this weekend i will be driving about a 800 miles on the freeway, i am looking forward to that to see how it perform. so far it has been great:cheers:

Seems counterintuitive. Turning up the fuel should increase smoke and EGTs. Did you turn up the boost too?
:hhmm:

exactly why i hesitated for a longtime, i was afraid that my neighbors will move out cause of the increase smoke. my boost was already turn up to 15psi prior to turning up fuel.

looking forward to this weekend to the 800 mile ride. i will have a change to go up 4,000 feet elevation see how it does there. for now i all smile:cheers:

The fuel screw in the 12HT goes in for less fuel and out for more fuel - opposite to what many others do.

i marked it then turned it counter clock wise one full turn
