I'm scheduled to have my 100 tuned by Master Yota this weekend (Master Yota - https://masteryotallc.com/). Has anyone else had this done? It's a street tune, not a dyno, but there is dyno data. It looks like the 4.7 gets around 10 HP/FtLbs give or take, but I have headers etc so that might change something. I would definitely like the shift points re-calibrated for my 35s (right now with the ECTPWR on it actually is pretty decent, but I'd like to get there with it off). Anything else I should ask about while I am having it done?

Not sure how much of a "tune" that can actually be done on these trucks, be curious what it is they claim they actually do.
I'm curious as well, it's not like the Subarus I had which were endlessly tunable, or the Hondata system in the Hondas. I guess they have a way to tune the ECU, which makes sense for shift points, and some other things, but I don't know what they manipulate to gain power (probably timing, AF ratio or something?) but the numbers are modest enough that in a way I feel better.

I've seen one of the later models 100 series get the Overland Torque Tune (OTT). The guy was happy with it.

I got mine tuned. 2006 lc. I absolutely love it. Had it done at adventure motors in kc. It's worth the cost. Drives better, shifting points changed to suite my driving style. Can't recommend it enough. I do want to clarify that it doesn't make it a drag truck.

so you are using the factory ECU? how exactly does that work? I didn't think the factory ECU's programming could be altered

What's the typical cost for a tune? Just ballpark, I'm sure it can vary greatly.

That was my longstanding understanding as well, but I guess if you are motivated enough anything is possible.

About $500. It's $600 with different air intakes etc, I think. I've definitely spent $500 on stupider stuff....

That's good feedback, thank you. Honestly I am in the minority, but I have never really found it to be slow, I would prefer to move the power band lower, as it is higher with the headers. I don't know if I will mess with the throttle response, as I am concerned about slow speed off road sensitivity. Getting some more passing power would be nice I guess too.

I think if someone took the time to play with cam timing in addition to the fuel trims there'd be a noticeable bump.
Heck, maybe even having webcams knock out a custom grind. We've a a few sets of cams cut and it's not very expensive at all.
Of course, this would only be ideal for someone with the mechanical know-how. Probably much cheaper than a supercharger set-up.

I've never looked into it but I'd be curious if the VV-T cams have a more aggressive lift/duration to go along with the timing advance?
With such a big power jump in the 06/07 motors there has to be a bit more than cam timing to the equation, but maybe not. It's possible
that Toyota left a lot on the table to allow for insanely high mileage ownership.

I've always been leery to mess with the mechanical parts on such a reliable engine, but I am sure that you are right. I think Toyota left a ton of power on the table with the 2UZ engines in order to maximize smoothness and reliability. I'd like to get the most out of my exhaust setup as well as get a little torque bump. I have a decent amount or torque steer already, with the heavier tires under hard acceleration, so I don't know how much more power I really need.

In for details.

Quick glance at their guides. Looks like they can alter the settings for some built in delays and timing events to make some minor changes. 5-10% increase in momentary peak values.

Annoying that they seem to intentionally hide the axis labels on their data, lol. That doesn't exactly instill confidence. Here's our data! No numeric labels for you!

I think the labels got formatted off the larger pics, but seem to be on the smaller ones. This is the data for the 2UZ in 4runners. Master Yota - https://masteryotallc.com/4runner-dyno-data

It has been a game changer for the 3rd Gen Tacoma. Remedies the gear hunting and other complaints. I wouldn't mind having one now with an OTT tune.

This would go well with that Brembo Big Dawg Brake Kit being discussed here, too.

I suppose if I paid $400 I would feel like it's faster, but I am a skeptic for these kinds of tunes that have no hardware changes on a N/A engine.

Maybe it's not slow. Idk. I drive diesel trucks with 800 hp+. My biggest reason for tuning was passing and towing. We visit Colorado and Arkansas. I pull a small trailer with a tent on it. The nonstop shifting and inability to feel safe when passing was my primary driver in the decision. This is where I had my biggest improvement.

For comparison, my 07 LX has never had an issue with passing power, nor has it ever hunted for gears or "over shifted". When I tow I turn off OD and use the PWR button.

Sure, it's not a rocket, but I'm honestly impressed with how the VVTi 4.7 moves this giant brick around.

Are you up to date on all your maintenance? Timing belt? Plugs? Coils? Transmission fluid? Fuel filter? Air filter? Etc.

I used to drive diesel Rabbits with 52hp so this thing feels like a rocket.

I'm on the flip side with a 680hp / 900+ ft-lb daily sedan so getting a 10hp bump to land at 192hp on a 6000 lb bus seems... uneventful?

It's going to drive like a big slow bus no matter what. Just enjoy the cruise, ya know?

I am actually pretty happy with acceleration from a stop (in fact I squeal the tires sometimes, especially accelerating while turning a corner) but I guess I could use some extra power passing, not that it's slow, but I do have to floor it sometimes. As far as being skeptical, I get that also. I do feel however, that the engineers made a few compromises and were very conservative, so there is a bit of meat on the bone to do a few tweaks without harming anything.
