Guys,

I generally lurk here at least once a day. I like watching you guys threads, I've had a 75 and a 1980 FJ40 in the past, none currently.

My 2006 tundra was having shift point problems (163k miles). Dropped it off at the shop, was informed the transmission is shot. The guy, who I really trust, said a new one from IPT is the best deal, but with install we're looking at $4k-4,500. The truck in functioning condition is an $8k truck. Any thoughts on what to do with it? Trade it (I generally am against trading as I feel you end up where you would've ended up without the trade), sell it (thoughts on value as is?), or donate it? It is generally in good condition, all reg maint, full synthetic, etc. its just not really clear cut to me. I can't really see sinking $4k into a $8k truck. 2012s with 20K miles are only around $20k.

Crash it and collect insurance $

:flipoff2:

Sounds like a shift solenoid/valve body issue. I doubt the transmission is toast as complete failure is pretty rare in that trans.

I second this. I'm certain the trans is probably salvageable. Just have it rebuilt and do solenoids and sensors. A lot cheaper and well worth it to me. If it's paid off, I would fix it and drive it. Either way you would have to get payments on the next vehicle if you were to down it. I use vehicles as investments. Place to put money and always know where it is. All else fails, part it out. You would not believe what you could get out of a part out. Usually triple trucks value in part outs. Get some quotes from other shops on rebuilds. Usually run around $900.00-$1300.00 depending on internal wear on parts. Good luck on your choice.

If you are looking to sell, I may be in the market for a 2005-2006 Tundra. Looking for Extra Cab and 4WD. That match what you have?
