First try was to far forward:

moved the mounts towards the drivers side a bit:

Then mounted the console to the fabricated mounts

The square metal tube is 1.5 x 1.5 inch.

That's a good amount of space. You have no problem getting your hand around the e-brake? Looks like a good position to me!
 
No, no problem reaching it at all. The way I installed the console leaves all the possible extra room in the front - read no rear cup holders. Not a problem for me, but could be a concern for some.
