I'm on my second 100 series Cruiser, a 2004 with 160k on the clock.

I've been suffering some sloppy front suspension issues lately so I decided to investigate today. I got it jacked up and noticed a lot of wear on the visible bushings on the sway bar links, so I have that on my list to replace. From what I can tell, it looks like the shocks are original and I'm going to replace those as well. I'm going to do OEM on all parts.

One thing that concerned me today was something I noticed before I took the wheel off. On both sides, there is play in the wheel when pushing and pulling at 12 and 6. Never at 3 and 9, but consistently at 12 and 6. It's not a ton, but it's certainly more than I'd expect from a wheel whose lugs are still on tight.

Is that common? Does it point to an issue? Potentially something with the wheel bearing or ball joint?

Thanks in advance!

12 and 6 would indicate a wheel bearing. Most likely the lock nut has worked it's way loose and you developed play because of that. It's a good idea to just tear it down and do a full repack or even a replace. @cruiseroutfit sells a nice wheel bearing kit with everything included at a great price.

I would repack rather then replace as long as is not humming.

I would repack and inspect everything and replace what's needed. Some parts (locking tab, gasket, seal, star washer) should be replaced anyway. If you tear everything down and then find out that you need something new...... you've gotta wait to get it or pay full price from your local dealer. Now your vehicle is torn apart for a few days.

Pull flange cap off to look for movement, also check the snap ring gap (<.20mm).

Old school checking of ball joint: Place jack near ball joint rising until pressure off ball joints. Have assistant place long pry bar under tire, prying up then relaxing repeatedly. Watch the ball joint for unusual movement.

Thanks everybody.

After the shock install the feel is better, but I'm going to take it in this week to check the wheel bearings. I appreciate the help.

Wanted to close the loop on this topic - I had the wheel bearings re-packed and had an alignment done. All is well - drives smooth again.
