I'm considering doing an OME heavy lift within the next month. I will also go for a 285 tires. Kinda torn between a BFG all terrain and a TrXus Mt. I've heard people are getting 80k miles out of the BFG but what about the super swamper. thanks, Brandon
*Also, any pics with the TrXus would be nice, i think i've only seen like 1 or 2 80's with them.

Get the BFG MT they are amazing in mud and everything. The allterrain really doesn't compare tot the super swamper because super swampers have bad wear. I have a buddy with the trxus and they wear very quickly. Go with something in between the all terrain and the trxus. Go BFG Mud baby!

you'd be the first person to say BFG MT's were good in mud...I owned a set for 10 years (early style) and they were a glorified mud terrain.

BFT-MT's have no siping and are marginal on ice, snow, and wet pavement. The AT's are far superior for a daily driver. The TrXus have siped lugs and improved wet traction as a result. A couple guys in Katemcy had the TrXus on their fullsize dually tow rigs and said they were pleased with the noise and handling of the tires, and considering their cheaper price and greatly improved offroad performance over a BFG, they'd get my nod.

Woody I agree with you on the siping. But I have heard bad resulst of the Trxus where people had to return them because they would give them bad tires. They also are soft rubber so they wear faster just like all swampers. Coming from a guy who drives his 80 everyday with mud tires the BFG is the best. Anyway you look at it, in the Southeast there is a lot of mud and allterrains just don't cut it like they do out west. Go with the BFG muds and you won't be dissapointed. They have longer wear than any other mud tire that I know of (not including mtr because that really isn't really a mud tire, it is more crawling tire). They perform great in mud. I have dealt with a lot of mud and have used BFG all terrains and mud terrains. But the decision is yours good luck. Oh and CruisinGA has the same ones and can vouch for how good they are in mud. Sure they are no swamper but they are good on road and off.

From somebody with first hand experience, I have 16,000 miles on my TrXus MTs and I think that it’s an outstanding tire. My tires are the 35x12.5 flavor. They were difficult to balance when new and remain difficult to balance almost a year later. However, they make much less noise on the road than my old GY MTRs; perform better in wet/icy conditions and flat out perform like a Swamper off road. Though they don’t grab in deep mud as well as a TSL or SX, I really think the added siping helps out on wet or snow covered rocks. I've watched friends on MTs or MTRs struggle for traction in spots where my truck walked (even unlocked).

I think in general they are too new of a tire to get an accurate guess at the expected tread life. BFG MTs have been around for years so everyone and their mom knows that they wear like iron on the road. I don't think that my TrXus will last as long, but for me the added performance off road is worth it.

Photoman and Robbie have also run the TrXus tires on their 80s, so you might want to search for some of their threads and find their opinions. I think ConcreteJungle might also be rocking the TrXus.

And remember, when reading online tires opinions, the type of wheeling and geographic location of folks needs to be taken into account. MTRs are loved out west and relatively scoffed at on the east coast. And the infamous weak sidewall of the BFG MT might be a concern if Hammers is your playground. For 95% of the folks out there it's a pretty darn aggressive tire. YMMV.

Cruiserhead05 what sort of wheeling do you want to do with them, that may help people appraise your situation and give better advice. Tyres capable of high mileages may not necessarily offer the best frictional grip because of the hard compounds, is high mileage a necessity. You mention two different types of tyres A/T and M/T do you think that it may be an idea to think out first what sort of tyre is best or desirable for you and then look at the brands and narrow down to your choice to decide which one you will go for based on information that you have collected.

Perhaps the best for you. Many with more or different experience might disagree.

1. The BFG MTs might be good in the mud relative to an AT. But the ATs suck in the mud.

2. [Hint: Don't argue with folks like Woody. Until the you adopt the Mantra "if you don't roll it you're not wheeling hard enough," just accept the wisdom of those with more experience than you.]

3. [Hint: Don't drag you buddy's good name into an argument -- especially a loosing one. It's poor form. Bailey is a smart and respected fellow. He can add his name to your arguement if wants but let him make the decision.]

Exactly it is best for me and he lives in the south too with mud not boulders. I am voicing my opinion and you are doing the same. Don't knock something I am saying because it works for me. Thats what this board is about. And I am not arguing with woody. I know he is sooo much more experienced than me but I am speaking from my experience and knowledge because I have had the all terrain and mud terrain on my daily driver and offroader. All I am saying is Bailey has them and likes them. You need to lay off and relax. Everyone here has a different opinion. That is why we talk about it.

Hint: woody is always up for a good argument, since I've been wrong once (well, maybe twice) and anyone who has the convictions on their statements to constructively argue their point always earns my respect....emotional opinions will earn you a bitch slap and a kick in the nuts....

BFG-MT's on my GMC when I sold it, spent more time rotating tires to prevent the fronts from cupping than I did for any other tire. Likely an issue with their IFS system tho, but 30k on those tires with lots of tread left when sold. Siped the center lugs for wet/snow traction.

BFG-AT's on my 95 minitruck, great running tire...also had General Grabber AP's on there (best snow tire IMO) and Dunlop Rovers (adequate) Usually pulled 40k outta a set.

BFG-MT's on my 40 when I first ran it, old style, 10+ years on those with never a complaint, but traction off-road was definitely lacking versus a Swamper. IMO, an aggressive AT tire that compromises it's offroad abilities for streetability.

I'm tire hunting for my 80 now....PitBull Tires is coming out with a TRUE 33" radial tire, but not sure which series offhand....33x12.5-16 or 33x13.5-16. Expecting a set of their new 39.5x14.5-17's in the Rocker pattern soon so I can destructively test them next to my 39.5 IROK's...

80 is bone stock right now, shopping for all kinds of upgrade this summer tho....right now, it needs a rear locker fix, an antenna for the radio, and some minor tweaks. CDan got my order last night....FSM, CDL switch, new antenna.

1st lift choice is Christo's new 4".....unsure on the balance of the adjustments tho, C really likes it stock, I wanna make a true mall cruiser tho, maybe some 20" spinnah's or sumthin....lol

http://www.pitbulltires.com - 35's are all they have now, more coming tho....I've met with them a couple times, first intro'd in Sept 04...straight shooters, no BS, and their 35's have won at least one comp in Paragon.

I like the trxus except for the constant balancing I had to do, the poor tire wear, my truck did not like the outside of the tires(cupped them), tire rotation on a weekly basis, poor fuel ecomany. The tire was tough as nail, did well off road, worked great on the back axle, handled a loaded truck well. I personally do not think the quality control is that great with the swamper line of tires (hopefully it has cahnged). I do beleive I would use them as a extentend long trip tire through central and south america where I would not get up much speed but wanted a tire I would count on for side wall protections and toughness. But I would not want them as a dialy driver tire(here in the USA), they wear too fast and my experence was not that great with the tire as a daily driver. later robbie

You guys are so lucky over there, you have a huge range of tyres to choose from that will suit all sorts of terrain and at very competitive prices and some times they seem to be covered by some sort of warranty. Over here we have a limited range of manufacturers who do not stock the entire breadth of sizes and they are I believe comparatively expensive. Occasionally we get one or two outlets that may offer say Pro Comp range or Simex but most just cover BFG, Goodyear, General, and a couple of nothing brands and that is about it except for some remould tyres. :)

I'm running 33 truxus. THe tires are quiet, ride well, and are AWESOME off road. I went through a mud hole that i was litterally dragging my diffs on the bottom, but the truxus tires kept digging and pulled me through. I think they are great tires, however, they are soft and do seem to be wearing quicker than i'de like. THey are also the best tire in snow i have ever had.

I wanted to add this: I have had no balance issues at all. They have only been balanced once, and have stayed. Also, i have been rotating them every 3,000 miles. I do have one tire that when it is up front, pulls a little. That has been my only complaint with them. I would expect based on my rate of wear to get around 30,000 miles out of a set when DD.

Both the tires you mentioned are totally different tires. What exactly do you want, mud tires or all terrains. I personally think that there is no better tires (overall) than BFG mud terrains and Goodyear MTR's. I personally have BFG mud terrains and I am extremely pleased with them.

Ok, to set things straight. I daily drive a 94 fzj80. It sees about 40 highway miles everday, as well as a gravel driveway, my driveway is extremely steep and in VA we do see a little snow. I would also be doing a little wheeling, mostly just fireroad type stuff in GWNF. Also, i will be going to college next year, either in NORTHERN VA or in Farmville, VA. Thee tires will see alot of pavement and need to wear well. Thats why i dont really see the TrXus as a good decision. BFG mtr's look nice but i just think they are overkill. trying to get something under 180. I really am open to any suggestions.

Ok first you are going to farmville with me buddy. Us 80 guys got to stick together. :D Second I would save the extra money to get the better tires. For everything you do I would say the BFG MT's or the goodyear Mtr's would be the best. They are mud tires good for fire roads, and they also last long and look great. You can save 20 bucks on each tire by going with something like procomp mud terrains which i also use to have but you will be sacrificing on the quality of the tire and how long it will last. So do yourself a favor and save up some extra money to spring for the BFG or Goodyear Mud tires. I say go with the BFG Mud terrains because they are great in mud and if you don't do a lot of rock crawling which it sounds like you don't then it is the best thing to go with. Good luck and can't wait to wheel with you. In Farmville hopefully.
 Josh

Any reason you're not considering Goodyear MT/Rs? IMO, it's a good all-round tire. Great in the west (Sierra granite, Moab slickrock, etc.)...maybe not so good in buggerville, but they only seem to run swampers there...:flipoff2:

I've run these tires for a couple years and have been very happy with them. I think they're good on both highway and serious trails.

I'd definitely go MT/Rs over BFG MTs any day.

Josh,

It's basically between Hampden-Sydney and George Mason now. Perhaps its not a good comparison but lets face it. There is four kids in out family and HSC is 30k + a year. although they will give me like 10k in scholarship....still very pricey, if i go to mason i can get me own appt. keep my car and maybe get a job.....I'm having a hard time deciding.

By the way, i have been talking alot with Lance at IRONPIGOFFROAD, he has been a huge help and i would highly recommend him purely on his customer service. I'm just hoping i can do the lift and give him my business after all the time he has spent talking to me. Josh, you've used him havent you?
