I have tried to turn the truck off since yesterday and it will not! Need a safe way to kill engine, other than stalling in gear! Then I need to find the real problem here; Traveling through Mexico, and this sucks-every military checkpoint wants me to turn off the motor- and this just causes more problems= they don't get it...Help if you can, THANKS!

Hi Mike. If you look at the intake just above the glow screen you'll notice a little vacuum pot on one side. Reach under that and find the spring loaded lever that connects to the intake butterfly. If you pull that up it will cut off air to the engine and safely stall it. The vacuum line is connected to a VSV down below there which could have failed.
Good luck

Earlier I tried to move the arm that must be connected to the throttle cable/peddle somehow, and the only thing I could get to happen was the motor revved up a bit each time. I am not sure where the glow pot is but maybe this is the same area? It is dark out here now, I will try this tomorrow morning early, and see, only pull/push the other way harder? I had also tried to pull a fuse in the fuse box 15amp that says"engine", nothing happened there though. Thankfully for tonight anyway, I have internet and your help! I will check back for responses in a bit.

Try to find this arm on the left side of the engine, First turn the key to the "on" position, (just before you turn to start the truck) then go see the position of the arm. then Start the truck, if you go see the arm (after the engine as started) it should be at a different position. So when you shut it down the arm should go back to the previous position and shut the truck off. Your problem might be that it doesn't move when you shut the truck. Just by moving the lever toward the front you should stop the engine.

Yes, even pictures!

First thing in the light of day I will try that! I just want to be sure-by "left side" you mean from drivers seat facing out ,or facing the motor from the front of truck? Thanks again, you guys are great!

The manual says LEFT and RIGHT is as viewed from the drivers seat.

Thanks, this will be the injector pump side then, not the turbo side. Helps, and feeling more confident about this situation now, and not as "stuck" as i had before, being so far south of the USA in a 24 volt truck, with parts so rare, and finding them even harder...

On these trucks the clutch booster often leaks vacuum. If you block off the vacuum line leading to the clutch booster, you should hopefully have the engine shut down in the usual fashion. I've heard it said that this may be hard on the clutch pedal mount, as it's designed to have the boost make it's life easy, but I've had no boost to the clutch for some 50,000km with no issues.

Here is are two pictures of the vacuum pot viewed from both sides of the engine bay. In the second pic you can see the round shaft going up and down below the pot. It's connected to linkage made of flat stock. Move that linkage to shut off the engine. (linkage in pic is in the off position)

If it is your clutch booster, you should be able to notice stiffness in the pedal and or hear slight vacuum leak coming from under the dash. On right hand drive 70's the booster is inside the cab on the firewall. If the booster is not leaking too bad, you might find that by lifting the clutch pedal slowly with the key off and in neutral, that you will hit a sweet spot where the leak will seal off long enough to shut down the engine.

Here is a pic looking down on the vacuum line coming from the clutch booster. Pull off the end of the hose visible in the pic and plug both openings. Should shut off normally now if the booster is the culprit.

Since it is a 13B-T you can also pull the tiny little rubber vaccum hose off to make it stop just reconnect to make it start again. This will make the linkage move also.

THe first of the 3 pics posted . CHnaces are the VSV has failed.

you better study your machine before you go anywhere. If all that fails with the VSV. There is a fuel stop on the IP move it towards the front of the truck. The VSV sometimes does not want to shut the truck off if the engine bay is really hot. Sometimes if the idle is low like around 500 the clutch pedal gets stiff and the brake pedal gets stiff (NOT ENOUGH VACUMM) turn the idle up with your hand throttle until your E brake light goes off.- Just something that these cruisers like to do now and then.

My problem is with this same thing ducatiman, I will look at my booster on the master cylinfder first thing in next week. It was true that I used to push the clutch pedal in after the ignition was turned off and it would sometimes shut off.

Truck is okay now, somehow fixed itself?

The problems I had from the not turning off to the off road lights are all gone for now. Some how I think it is related to both the clutch booster and heat; I have not driven much in a week except to the beach to surf, and into town 20 minutes away, and no problem turning off anymore. Once I did get it to turn off by pushing in the clutch, but the next time, I did not and not since has it happened. Whwn everything went to crap I was driving like 12 hours straight to get down here, and it was either snowing, raining or, very hot/humid. I am going to try and ride this out and wait to fix it when either back in USA or forced too.
Thank you everyone for the help, I really felt stranded!

won't turn off-bj74

I am still having the same issue with mine. I am traveling and am in Oaxaca,Mexico.
I find that when I stop the motor by pushing/pulling the rod on that vacuum pot feeding air or fuel, the part that I am bypassing does not ever seem to move to the opposite position which would shut off the truck. I tried to remove and block the vacuum hose, and the port on the part, but nothing happens when turning off. Not sure if it is getting vaccum or not to it. Tried tracing the vacuum line from the clutch booster, no luck finding anything. How is yours working out?

Any help...

I pulled the vacuum hose off the clutch booster as described earlier here, and tried to turn truck off as normal(while blocking off both ends) and nothing happened! I do notice vacuum pressure on the pump side, but nothing changed from before. This means something, I just do not know what it points too? Any help...

I had much the same trouble just would not shut off but if I had the lights on and turned the key off then turn the headlights off with the key in the off pos the truck would shut off.... and the glow plug solinoid was sounding funny and I found a loose ground wire ans some green death on the wire as well . So I fixed it and never had the trouble since. One can only hope your problem can be solved that easy... but I would bet it is a short some place ..
