Troubling sound

I'm hearing a humm/grinding/vibration type strange sound from what seems to be near the fire wall/engine compartment. I'm sure that doesn't describe it very well..
It does at idle (clutch disengaged-stationary and while in motion in gear as well as out of gear) if I pump the gas pedal it stops the noise.
The p.o. replaced the rear main and clutch but the bellhousing is pretty oily. Would this have anything to do with the throw out bearing? It sounds funky with the clutch disengaged at an idle. I'm not even sure if it's called that.

If I remember correctly, the through out bearing when bad makes a noise when the clutch pedal is pressed, this is the only time the bearing is worked. A noise in all conditions could mean a pilot bearing. Oil in the bell-housing is a bad sign, either the seal is bad, or the PO did a lousy job cleaning up after the new seal. Not much help, but I would recheck the Clutch work done by the PO. Is the pedal releasing all the way? could be air in the hydraulics? How much pedal play is there.
